CATUBAY VIES FOR OPBF CROWN ANEW
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Wed, 26 Oct 2005
Lucky breaks are indeed a dime a dozen these days for RP flyweight champ Federico Catubay.
After failed attempts at winning important regional titles, Catubay will once again be in the limelight as he vies for the vacant Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) flyweight title anew against ex-ruler Noriyuki Komatsu on November 22 at the Prefectural Gym in Osaka, Japan.
The SGG fighter Catubay had heart-breaking chances to win the WBC Youth minimumweight title, WBC Youth light-flyweight title, OPBF flyweight and WBO Asia Pacific superfly crown. He failed to deliver in all those breaks.
However, the Labason, Zamboanga native hopes to turn things around when he tangles with Komatsu, (20-2-5, 9 KO's) the ex-OPBF champ and one-time WBC title challenger.
"This is make-or-break for me. I will win," said Catubay in a recent interview at the ALA Gym.
In his last fight, Catubay had knocked out Japanese Masayuki Fujigake in the tenth round. The Japanese fighter was then brought to the hospital, where he underwent surgery to remove clotting in his brain.
