WBC RULES PAC-MORALES WINNER GETS BARRERA
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sat, 08 Oct 2005
At the on-going World Boxing Council annual convention in Spain, the Mexico-based governing body has ruled that the winner of the January 21 showdown between superstars Erik Morales and Manny Pacquiao will be made the mandatory challenger to WBC super-featherweight king Marco Antonio Barrera.
WBC President Jose Sulaiman, following a meeting with his Board of Governors which includes GAB chairman Eric Buhain, has ruled that Barrera should face the winner between no. 1 ranked Morales and no. 2 Pacquiao in their rematch set at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
In the same meeting, Sulaiman and his board also ruled that newly-crowned WBC light flyweight champ Brian Viloria should face compatriot Juanito Rubillar in his next fight, and the winner should defend against Thai Wandee Singwancha.
Erik Morales is coming off a heart-breaking loss to Zahir Raheem last September 10 in his first foray as a lightweight. Following the loss, the Mexican hero had decided to return to the super-featherweight division.
Pacquiao, who on the same card had stopped Mexican Hector Velazquez in the sixth round, is currently in the United States to cheer for his younger brother Bobby who will see action against US-based El Salvadoran Carlos "El Famoso" Hernandez this Sunday underneath the Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo rematch.
Pacquiao is set to return to the country right after his brother's fight, and is slated to immediately buck down to training for his bout with Morales.
