MELENDEZ IS DANGEROUS ? GORRES PhilBoxing.com Fri, 30 Apr 2010 Fiery, frightful and ferocious best describes the power- punching Luis Melendez of Colombia who is expected to bring havoc to Filipino boxing aficionados when he collides with former WBO Oriental Bantamweight Champion, Michael Domingo on May 23, 2010 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino. ALA Promotions in collaboration with the giant broadcast network ABS/CBN sports is bringing the much-awaited showdown which has captured the boxing circle with electrifying interest not seen since the classic battle between Gorres-Darchinyan in February 2, 2008 in the same majestic venue of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel?Pacific Ballroom. The rugged Melendez who sports a fearsome 21 knockouts of his 26 wins achieved notoriety and animosity when he sent the well-liked Cebuano to the hospital for emergency neurosurgery last November in University Medical Center in Las Vegas. It took only a single lethal blow from the explosive Columbian to end the promising career of Gorres who was then touted to be the next Filipino world champion. When asked to assess the chances of his stablemate Michael Domingo against Melendez, Gorres warned, ?He should not make the same mistake I did. I relaxed my defense believing I was much ahead on points. You cannot do that with Melendez. He is too dangerous.? Domingo in response to a Cebu Sportswriter question during a press conference held a few days ago said, ?This fight is personal. This is a very emotional one for me. I cried when I learned what happened to Gorres.? He added ?I am dedicating this fight to him.?
