ALA Promotions Bares Big Plans

ALA President Michael Aldeguer (L) with Sun.Star's Jun Migallen (C) and PhilBoxing's Salven Lagumbay (R) during Tuesday night's informal presscon/dinner at Phat Thursday sports bar in Cebu.

?Why can?t a Philippine-based company become a world renowned promotional company??

ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer made known their bold plans in a press conference held last Tuesday to build on the momentum of their recent string of successful events like the April 23 Dubai fight card and continue to promote famous boxers and big fight cards here in abroad.

For the past few years, ALA Promotions has brought to Cebu popular foreign boxers like Fernando Montiel and Vic Darchinyan. The Cebu-based promotional company announced that they will promote former WBC minimumweight champ Katsunari Takayama in a May 22 fight held at the Mandaue City Sports Complex against Filipino Jayson Rotoni, who is ranked number 9 here in the country. What makes this event unique is that Japanese champions have been known to fight exclusively on home soil. ALA fighter Larry ?Bon Jovi? Canillas is tagged to fight in the undercard.

Aldeguer also said that they are having talks with Japanese manager Joe Koizumi to have Randy Suico fight again in Cebu. On May 8 there will be a boxing promotion at the South Reclamation Project. Boxing fans all over the Philippines are looking forward to May 23 for the much anticipated fight between Michael Domingo and Luis Melendez at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino.

?Melendez will be surprised that he is more famous here in Cebu than his native Colombia.?,Aldeguer said. Boxing fans have been waiting to see him up close after the ill-fated bout with Z Gorres. The undercard bouts will feature Jimrex Jaca against James Kimori of Kenya. Jaca?s boxing career has been rejuvenated ever since he joined the ALA Gym.

Aldeguer announced plans to tie up with other international promoters. Their plans include having Rey ?BoomBoom? Bautista fight in Virginia, USA in June, having former two time world champion Brian Viloria fight here in Cebu in June in a fight card that would include AJ Banal, and staging a world title fight in Bacolod City where WBO minimumweight champ Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes will defend against his mandatory challenger Carlos Buitrago of Nicaragua in July. They will also be having another fight card in Dubai this October. There are also more ambitious plans of matching up Mexican legends Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez against Filipino boxers.

Attending the press conference were Milan Melindo who talked about his recent victory in Dubai, Jimrex Jaca and Michael Domingo. Michael Aldeguer said that their company?s plan to make it big internationally will continue the work and tradition established by his father, Cebu boxing patron Antonio L. Aldeguer who through the years, worked hard to develop boxing talent and produce world champions for our country.
