JUST bring ‘em on By Dennis Principe PhilBoxing.com Wed, 28 Sep 2005 This is quintessentially the challenge of Hawaiian born boxer Brian Viloria when asked about the possible marquee fights in the horizon, now that he is the universally recognized champion of the once-thrilling lightflyweight division. In an interview with this writer, Viloria expressed his enthusiasm in leading the way in bringing back the splendor of their division which, not too long ago, produced a few but momentous battles. In bringing more hype to Viloria and the division, his management team wants to arrange a fight versus World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico who holds a perfect record of 23-0, 5 KO’s. According to Viloria’s manager Gary Gittlesohn, they are currently negotiation for a possible three-fight contest with Calderon, a cat-quick southpaw who has defendend his belt six times since 2003 beneath several high-profile boxing promotions in the United States. The plan is to fight Calderon right in his hometown in Puerto Rico, then arrange a rematch in Hawaii and eventually stage a possible third fight in the United States. Gittlesohn, who is also in town along with Brian's father Benjamin, ultimately plans to pit Viloria with Mexican flyweight phenom Jorge Arce, once the ruler of Viloria's current division. Gittlesohn added that American promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank Inc. plans to restage a million-dollar battle in the division which was once achieved by American Michael Carbajal and Mexican legend Humberto 'Chiquita' Gonzales. The said superfight happened on March 13, 1993 and was the first million dollar fight in Jr. Flyweight boxing history and also the first Jr. Flyweight fight in history to head a Pay Per View boxing card. Gittlesohn hopes to achieve the same once Viloria and Arce finally meet atop the right sometime next year. Meanwhile, Viloria credits American trainer Freddie Roach into transforming him from his humdrum style to being a remarkable knockout marvel. "Freddie told me I have to be more aggressive and explosive for people to catch on to my weight division because that's what it took in order for our division to be popular." Said Viloria who is billeted at the Mania Peninsula Hotel since arriving Sunday morning from LA. Viloria's new-found assertive style indeed paid-off as he already knocked out six of his last seven foes, most notable of which was his sensational 1st round demolition of Mexican Eric Ortiz to capture the WBC 108-lb tiara last September 11 in Los Angeles. "It cornered a lot of attention to me and to our weight division which is most important," added Viloria, who now holds an immaculate record of 18-0 spiked by 12 KO's.
