Mayol wishes Gejon 'more power' By Dennis Principe PhilBoxing.com Fri, 23 Sep 2005 AS his bosom buddy, Oriental boxing champion Rodel Mayol wants to wish world minimumweight title challenger Eriberto ‘Yukka’ Gejon more power. And the 24-year-old Mayol means that literally. According to Mayol, current Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) 105-lb champion, Gejon needs to redouble the degree of his punches for him to get a much better chance of becoming a world champion this weekend. Sunday night in Yokohama, Japan, the 26-year-old Gejon battles reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) minimumweight ruler Yutaka Niida in a 12-round championship match. “Malakas na sana ang suntok ni Yukka pero dapat yung follow-up sa suntok niya ang dapat niyang damihan.” Revealed Mayol in a telephone interview with this writer. Mayol, also the World Boxing Council (WBC) top ranked contender in the same division, worked as sparring partner for Gejon two weeks prior to the latter’s Japan incursion. Mayol disclosed that Gejon should put forth his very best in scoring a knockout win to avoid the dreaded hometown verdict for the Japanese champion. And this, added Mayol, is highly achievable if only Gejon puts more pressure on the champion by throwing more punches than usual. “Paboritong kalaban ni Gejon yung style ni Niida at maliit din ito sa kaniya. Basta i-pressure lang niya ang kalaban sigurado mananalo siya kay Niida” said Mayol who holds an impressive 21-0 record spiked by 16 knockouts. As an added motivation, Gejon (21-0-1, 13 KO’s) will have a star-studded cheering squad come fight night, with no less than Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao leading a cast of eminent boxing figures who will personally cheer for the Mandaue boxer. Joining Pacquiao in his Mabuhay! mantra are Mayol, Gejon’s manager Wakee Salud and former world flyweight champion Malcolm Tu?acao, another close friend of Gejon. Meanwhile, Mayol and Tu?acao, both managed by Japanese businessman Yosue Matsuoka, will be staying in Japan in the next few months to perk up their own world title aspirations. The 27-year-old Tu?acao (18-1-2, 13 KO’s) will vie for the OPBF bantamweight crown versus Thai Kumarnthong Por Pluemkamol on November 19 at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. Mayol on the other hand is still awaiting word from his manager regarding a possible tune-up fight this October. Mayol is however scheduled to meet 2nd ranked contender Lorenzo Trejo of Mexico in a 12-round WBC title eliminator early next year.
