REEXAMINE LAURENTE'S BOXING CAREER, TOP RANK URGED By Granville Ampong PhilBoxing.com Sat, 20 Mar 2010 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, MARCH 18, 2010 - I caught up with one of the most avoided boxers in the light welterweight division at the Los Angeles International Airport last night just before he boarded the Philippines Airlines bound to the Philippines. Dennis Laurente does not look like the kind of boxer who could intimidate those in the ring of fists. A soft-spoken provincial warrior who looks out for his family, he is described by virtually everyone who knows him as a genuinely nice person. But, consider his record in the light welterweight ranking in the Philippines. He is the No. 1 boxer in that weight class who remains undefeated of his last eleven fights, marking a total humbling record of 34 wins inclusive of 17 knockouts, 5 draws and 3 losses. His losses are void of a knockout but technical decision, split decision and unanimous decision respectively. Laurente fought last March 12 and won comfortably by unanimous decision over the tough fighter, Ben Tackie (29-11-1) from Accra, Ghana, a region where Joshua Clottey, who fought Pound-for-Pound King Manny Pacquiao, also was raised during his early childhood. The said fight was fought at the Gaylord Texan Hotel in Grapevine, Texas. The judges scored the bout: Brock Groom 78-74; Michael Mitchell 77-75; and Doug Lord 77-75. Laurente is probably the most underrated boxer the Philippines has ever produced, as of this writing. He could have joined the ranks of the top ten of the pound-for-pound list, if only proper promotions and marketing, even attentions, were given to him and to his training by his handlers in the U.S., according to one of the boxing fans, Jerry Torres from San Diego, who happened to be one of the passengers of the same flight the boxer was boarding. A native from Palompon, Leyte, Philippines, Laurente started as a professional boxer in 1994 at age 16. Laurente should have a title shot before the close of this year, this writer exhorts. A firm 5'8" of southpaw stance, Laurente thrives under the care of Johnny S. Elorde, President of the Johnny Elorde Management International, and his wife, Liza Elorde, a proactive care manager of the boxers in their camp. The author (L) with Dennis Laurente.
