MELLIGEN DESTROYS OPPONENT, GALICA UNDEFEATED NO MORE

PhilBoxing.com

Pinoy Power 3 vs. Latin Fury 13 at Las Vegas Hilton Pavilion Center on Saturday, February 13, 2010 actually started at the 2nd bout of the night with Top Rank prospect Filipino Mark Melligen taking on undefeated Texan Raymond Galica for the 8-round welterweight fight.

As promised and as planned, Mark Jason Melligen showed the adjustment he made in training by carrying the fight right from the beginning with his aggressiveness and coming forward all throughout the fight. Although, Galica threw the first jabs in the first two rounds, Melligen ensured that his counter-jabs and counter-punches were more effective and made more prominent with combination salvo that shocked Galica to the bones. Galica at times were throwing punches as if zooming from nowhere after weird body jumps that Melligen evaded with consistency.

After gauging Galica in the first round, Melligen punished Galica in the next rounds with more body and head punches. Galica held Melligen at the last 10 seconds of the second round but referee Bayless intervened and Melligen was able to connect before the bell rang.

Third round was all Melligen as he carried the round with power punches left and right to the body and head of Galica. His combination was so much to take that Galica’s punches were lacking of strength and could barely hurt Melligen.

Galica threw the first few jabs as Melligen countered in the 4th round. However, as Galica could only managed baby punches, Melligen were throwing power punches that either hit its marks or miss as Galica had that ability at times to weave his head away from a sure blow. At one time, Galica raised his arms in triumph and ran around akin to a kid who just received a lollipop as he was able to evade Melligen’s punches with his weaving but stooped head and this jubilation earned quite a reaction from the crowd.

Melligen started aggressively in the 5th round with a punch to the body followed to the head of Galica and more to the body. Melligen missed at times but continued his barrage of punches alternatively to the head and body of Galica. A left hook sent Galica reeling to the canvas. He beat the count and was able to jab his way out of Melligen’s finishing salvo.

Galica who appeared to have a right foot forward steady stance from the 1st round up to the 5th round while awaiting referee Bayliss’ call to enter the center of the ring had a weaker stance in the 6th round a with a little jog-in-place to mask a debilitated and punished body. Galica started with a combo as Melligen countered with jabs and upper cut. A straight left had Galica seeing stars as he wilted to the canvas. Referee Bayless had to stop the fight as the bloodied Galica could fight no more.

“Masayang-masaya po ako sa panalo ko. Ako ang first na Pinoy na nanalo. Inialay ko ang laban kung ito kay Z Gorres at sa lahat ng Pilipinong sumusuporta sa amin. (I am so happy with my win. I am the first Filipino who win. I am dedicating this fight to Z Gorres and to all the Filipinos that support us) Melligen said after the fight.

Tony Martin who trains Melligen was all praises for his boxer. He said he is waiting for the instruction from Top Rank regarding Melligen’s next fight. He was pretty sure that Melligen’s performance tonight has impressed Top Rank and once again earned their trust and commitment.
