ROACH’S TWO-TIME OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST WINS BY 1ST ROUND KO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 07 Feb 2010 Trainer Freddie Roach’s promising super bantamweight Guillermo Rigondeaux has won his fifth straight fight since turning pro with a devastating knockout of comparatively experienced Adolfo Landeros (20-13-1, 9 KO’s) in a fight card in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist used a vicious left to the body to drop Landeros who lay on the canvas for several minutes after only 28 seconds of the first round. With the win Rigondeauz improved to 5-0 with 4 knockouts. Roach left pound-for pound king Manny Pacquiao’s Friday workout in the hands of conditioning expert Alex Ariza so he could work the corner of Rigondeaux. Ariza told us earlier that former two-division world champion, veteran Filipino southpaw Gerry Penalosa had been sparring with Rigondeaux and had gone toe-to-toe with the youngster. Penalosa has been training at the Wild Card Gym in preparation for his WBO bantamweight interim title fight against another former world champion Eric Morel of Puerto Rico in “Pinoy Power III/Latin Fury 13” at the Las Vegas Hilton on February 14, Manila Time, in a blockbuster fight card headlined by the WBA super flyweight interim title fight between Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire and hard-hitting Mexican Gerson Guerrero. The fight card will also feature five Filipinos including Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales who battles WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel in a title clash, featherweight Bernabe Concepcion against aggressive southpaw Mario Santiago and welterweight Mark Jason Melligen against undefeated Raymond Gatica. The fights will be telecast over the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN Channel 2 at 10:30 a.m. with replays over Studio 23 at 8:00 p.m.and Channel 2 at 11:15 p.m. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
