Melgarejo and Tampus to vie for OPBF Titles

Philippine super-featherweight champion Aaron Melgarejo will challenge Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) super-featherweight champion Takashi Uchiyama of Japan on October 3, 2009 in Tokyo, Japan. Melgarejo is Uchiyama’s number 1 challenger.
Uchiyama, who won the title on September 8, 2007 and last defended his title last May 2, 2009, will be making his 5th defense against Melgarejo.
In the accompanying championship fight, OPBF number 1 ranked super-flyweight Marvin Tampus will likewise attempt to wrest the title from OPBF champion Kohei Kono, also of Japan. Kono, who won the tile on May 2, 2009, will be making his first defense against Tampus.
Both bouts are scheduled for 12 rounds.
The OPBF was founded in 1955 and is a co-founder in 1963 of the World Boxing Council (WBC). At present OPBF is one of the 11 continental federations comprising the WBC. The OPBF member countries are Australia, Fiji, Guam, Hawaii, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, New Zealand, PAMA, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Republic of China, Samoa, Taiwan, Thailand and Tonga.
