VILLANUEVA SURVIVES FOOD POISONING TO DECISION BARCELONA PhilBoxing.com Mon, 28 Sep 2009 Midsayap, North Cotabato - World Boxing (WBO) Oriental Featherweight Champion Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva survived a serious case of food poisoning before a fight and relied on big, big heart to win over the veteran Jaime Barcelona by unanimous decision after 10 rounds Saturday night, Sept. 26. Two of Villanueva's teammates at the Braveheart Boxing Club (BBC) -- 16-year-old Kayver Magusara and previously undefeated 18-year-old Rogelio Canete -- were not as lucky though as they yielded to their opponents by decision. A third Braveheart fighter, 18-year-old Gary Lumacad knocked down his opponent Jongjong Ponteras and won by decision in his second 4-round bout but had to be rushed to the hospital after the fight because of stomach pain. North Cotabato Vice Gov. Manny Pinol, who owns the BBC with his brothers, said the food poisoning was traced to sotanghon noodles which the fighters took at about 3 p.m. prior to the fight. Villanueva, 23, who came into the fight with an immaculate record of 15 wins and 15 KOs, floored Barcelona in the 3rd round with a left uppercut to the chin but failed to follow it up as he complained of stomach pain and started panting as early as the second round. The veteran Barcelona, who had 83 professional fights prior to the bout with Villanueva, engaged the young North Cotabato champion in a slugfest and managed to stagger Thunderbolt several times during the bout. In the end though, it was Villanueva's extraordinary courage and determination which won him the fight. He fell to the floor in the dressing room writhing in pain after the bout. WBO Oriental Miniflyweight champion Rommel "Little Assassin" Asenjo, 20, who is preparing for a big fight, also complained of stomach cramps but was able to dispose of young Jimboy Mansalayao in the 3rd round with a big right to the body. Glenn "The Rock" Porras, 24, who made his first comeback fight after an 8-month medical leave, also showed signs of stomach cramps but won his fight against Rolando Omila scoring a knockdown in the 5th enroute to a unanimous decision in 6 rounds.
