“OPERATION: METRO MANILA” IN FULL SWING PhilBoxing.com Mon, 28 Sep 2009 LOS ANGELES — “Operation: Metro Manila” was launched yesterday to immediately address the needs of the needy and downtrodden Filipinos who were victims of the worst floods in Metro Manila never seen over the past 40 years. A campaign for donations, relief goods and clothes has been readied with the conglomeration of all sectors of society including the church, civic, local government units, and business sectors. Drop-off points will include churches in Southern and Northern California and hospitals, among other points to be named later. The Manny Pacquiao Foundation, a non-profit organization, is spearheading the project with the cooperation of the Guardians group of Los Angeles and “Pacland” (www.mannypacquiao.ph), the ad hoc website of No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer Manny Pacquiao. Tropical depression codename “Ondoy” wreaked havoc in Metro Manila and claimed more than 100 lives and damage to property along its wake, not sparing anyone—rich, poor, young or old—in its path and leaving a trail of mud and hopelessness. As of press time, much of Metro Manila is still reeling from the effects of the tragedy. Donations may include canned goods, blankets, clothes and cash. Contact Anton Mazur of the Manny Pacquiao Foundation (Northern California) 510-376-5437 or Winchell Campos, (Southern California) 323-317-1710 for further details. Catholic churches will be mobilized to accept donations, too, including other accredited hospitals. Several airlines, including Philippine Airlines, are also being solicited for help to speed up the delivery of the goods to the Philippines, particularly in hard-hit Metro Manila. Nearly 60 people were killed [latest reports have tallied more than 100 deaths - ed.], Manila was blacked out and airline flights were suspended as a powerful typhoon battered the main Philippines island of Luzon on Saturday, disaster officials said REUTERS/Erik de Castro (PHILIPPINES ENVIRONMENT DISASTER IMAGES OF THE DAY). |
