DONAIRE SR. SAVED THE DAY FOR MICHAEL KATSIDIS
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Tue, 22 Sep 2009
It seems that lady luck is smiling on Nonito Donaire, Sr. as he continue on with his involvement in boxing.
First, Marvin Sonsona, the young phenom from General Santos won the WBO Light flyweight title against Carita Lopez at the Casino Rama in Ontario Canada. Donaire Sr and Jun Agrabio were the tandem coaches who guided Sonsona to the title.
While it is true that Agrabio developed and nurtured the skills of Sonsona, Donaire Sr refined them making Sonsona a complete fighter.
Then the following week after the Sonsona victory at San Jose, California, Donaire Sr was at the corner of Ana Julaton as she fought for the IBA Bantamweight title. Donaire Sr with the help of his nephew, Alvin Jugarap trained Julaton at the Kennel Boxing Gym at San Leandro. Julaton beat Kelsey Jeffries to win the title.
Then last week-end at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Donaire and Jugarap were at the corner of Michael Katsidis as the Australian battled Vicente Escobedo for the Interim WBO lightweight title.
Early in the fight, Katsidis suffered a nasty cut over his left eye.
But, Donaire Sr., using his expertise as a cut-man managed to stop the bleeding and he continually attended to the cut between rounds preventing it from getting worse.
With that, Katsidis was able to focus on the fight and he eventually won over Escobedo by a close split decision.
Had it not been for Donaire Sr who managed the cut, Katsidis would have been disadvantaged and who knows if the result would have been the same.
Nonito Donaire, Sr. surely saved the day for Katsidis.
