“Keep Violence Inside The Ropes” Campaign

The Talkin Boxing With Billy C Radio Show has embarked on a mission to help convince our youth to put down the guns and put on the Gloves!

When the world lost a great man in Former World Champion, Vernon Forrest, due to the gutless act of being shot to death while putting air in his tires at a gas station in Atlanta, ESPN.com asked Forrest’s former promoter Gary Shaw for a statement. Mr. Shaw said, “The Violence, the guns have to go. Violence belongs inside the ropes. Not outside them. It’s just senseless. Maybe Boxing ought to dedicate itself to keeping the violence inside the ropes and try to send that message out to the world.”

Being outraged over the situation as most people were, “Talkin Boxing With Billy C” host, Bill Calogero read Gary’s statement and immediately decided to spearhead a campaign to help get the word out.

“I have been critical of Gary Shaw in the past, but when I read that, I thought that Gary hit the nail on the head. Boxing gets a bad rap, but the truth is, it really does consist of good people and Gary’s statement made a lot of sense to me. I reached out and spoke to Gary Monday (July 27, 2009) and got his permission to take his statement and create the “Keep Violence Inside The Ropes” Campaign. We hope to help convince our youth to put down the guns and pick up the gloves”, said Calogero. He added, “I think if we can get the support of everyone involved with Boxing to help spread the word that we can make a difference. After all, if we can save one life, it will be a success.”

It’s tough growing up in any era, but today we have reached a point that demands attention. Based on peer pressure, or living in violence day in and day out, it’s easy to see why and how a young person reaches for a gun. They think it gives them strength, power and most of all, respect. The problem here is that in most cases, a situation that involves a gun usually ends up with a senseless death, a long, even life-long, jail-term and several family members and friends who suffer over one senseless act that took as much time as it takes to pull a trigger. Many lives are changed forever in that fraction of a second. This tragic result CAN be avoided.

The “Keep Violence Inside The Ropes” Campaign will give these young people a chance to show strength, power and get the respect they need Inside The Ropes. It takes a mentally strong, and physically powerful person that WILL get respect, win lose or draw, to get into the ring and fight, especially in front of a crowd. The truth is, it takes MORE strength, power and GUTS to step in the ring than it does to pick up a gun!

After evaluating the campaign and its goals, Billy C and Dave Wilcox decided that the best solution to help get our young people to choose to put on a pair of gloves rather than pick up a gun to settle differences, or to prove how tough or macho they are would be to help the local Gyms raise money to help provide a vehicle in which this type of idea will work. Wars are won in the trenches, and the Gyms are IN those trenches! We need to have a clear choice that our young people can make. We need them to choose to put down the gun and pick up the gloves themselves. But in order to make a choice, the option has to be there. It can work. It needs to work. Together, we WILL make it work!

We are currently looking for Gyms that want to participate. This program will help raise money for the gym so that memberships, equipment, programs, etc can be established in every city in the world. We also need volunteers!

If you can’t help, or don’t know a gym that may want to get involved, you can STILL make a difference! We are also looking for EVERYONE for his or her endorsement and support in hopes of making a difference.
