AT FAN RALLY: SCATHING REBUKE FROM JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ TO PACQUIAO OVER MAYWEATHER-MARQUEZ FIGHT By Granville Ampong PhilBoxing.com Tue, 19 May 2009 LOS ANGELES, California, May 17, 12:25 p.m. – Yes, fan rally is never short of lingering genre. And it, thus, continues: Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez never stops issuing challenges toward his everlasting foe, Pound-for-Pound King Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, during a rousing fan rally of less than three hundred attendees at noon time today at “Placita Olvera” (Olvera Street), which is part of El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument and known as the “birthplace” of the city of Los Angeles. Delving into the brand of entertainment with much “amor” and “gusto”, Marquez plays a few notes with violin along with the Mariachi Band and energetically even sings Spanish song in an oratorical fashion. His eyes brighten when asks about the prospect of winning his fight against Mayweather, who recently makes his return to the sweet science of boxing after 16 months of unmerited hiatus. Nonetheless, it all seems the mid-summer has come so fast at this site as Marquez delivers the same cutting statements through the air that he spelled out at the press conference called for by Golden Boy Promotions, held a few hours just before the Pacquiao-Hatton fight last May 2, at the Hollywood Theater of MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. In his blue jeans and navy-blue T-shirt of athletic fit, Marquez looks straight to the cameras and, nay, does not hesitate to dash off his utter rebuke to the boxing aficionados and fans. “Pacquiao keeps running from me,” says Marquez, who strikes his upper extremities to the air with confidence. “And he does not want to face me a third time; he just keeps running away.” “So, I decided to fight the very, very best and that is Floyd Mayweather,” adds Marquez. Not to be outdone of this brief fan rally lasting only forty-five minutes are WBO NABO Light Welterweight titlist Victor Ortiz, WBC Super Bantamweight Champion Israel Vazquez, a few media personalities, officials of the Golden Boy Promotions and the very fascinating beauties from Cerveza Tecate, one of the sponsors of the Mayweather vs. Marquez event, who make the fan rally a bit dramatic. Marquez signs autographs and gives rare photo opportunities for the boxing fans around the Placita Olvera. The Los Angeles leg of the tour will continue tomorrow, May 18, with a bevy of interviews for the fighters and an outdoor, open to the public, press conference in front of the Los Angeles Public Central Library downtown before the caravan jets across the country to New York for the tour’s next stop. Mayweather vs. Marquez: “Number One/Numero Uno” is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions in association with Marquez Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and Southwest Airlines. The 12-round bout will take place on July 18 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada and to be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9 pm ET/6 pm PT. The Mayweather vs. Marquez pay-per-view telecast, beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, has a suggested retail price of $ 49.95, will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to more than 71 million pay-per-view homes. The telecast will be available in HD-TV for those viewers who can receive HD. HBO Pay-Per-View is the leading supplier of event programming to the pay-per-view industry.
