DENNIS LAURENTE, RANKING SECOND TO MANNY PACQUIAO BASED ON THE PHILIPPINES? DOMESTIC RANKING SYSTEM, SHOULD BE HEADING FOR A TITLE FIGHT THIS YEAR By Granville Ampong PhilBoxing.com Thu, 07 May 2009 DENNIS LAURENTE, RANKING SECOND TO MANNY PACQUIAO BASED ON THE PHILIPPINES? DOMESTIC RANKING SYSTEM, SHOULD BE HEADING FOR A TITLE FIGHT THIS YEAR LOS ANGELES, California ? Dennis Laurente (31-3-5, 16 knockouts) is probably one of the most under-rated boxers from the Philippines based on the world ranking of the Official Boxing Records(BoxRec), an entity dedicated to keep updated records of professional boxers. Its objective is to document every single professional boxer and boxing match from the instigation of the Queensberry Rules. Laurente is No. 29 in the world ranking and No. 2 in the Philippines? domestic ranking at the Light Welterweight Division, next to Pound-for-Pound King Manny ?Pacman? Pacquiao. Laurente fought against former sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao, Marvin ?Much Too Much? Cordova (20-1-1), and won a comfortable 77-74 margin on the scorecards of three judges of the Top Rank Boxing Event at the Hard Rock Hotel last May 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Cordova demonstrated his toughness being the legitimate holder of the WBA, NBA, US Light Welterweight Championship and the Interim WBC Youth World Light Welterweight Championship, Laurente gave him a great show of boxing skills, landing clinical jabs and uppercuts in their 8-round non-title fight in the lightweight division. Laurente, a southpaw bearing 5?8?, exposed the rugged U.S.-American in the early rounds en route to round 8 with his devastating and explosive combinations, according to Maharlikan Times Reporter/Photo Journalist Leoncio Royo, Jr., who was credentialed to cover Urbano vs. Harris event and its undercards. A humble one from Palompon Leyte, Laurente thrives under the care of Johnny S. Elorde, President of the Johnny Elorde Management International, and his wife, Liza Elorde. ?Laurente,? fondly called by first his name Dennis,? is such a disciplined and dedicated boxer,? said Liza Elorde, who is proactive in the care of over fifty boxers in the Philippines. ?He loves in what he does and gets into training religiously.? ?Laurente must have a title match this year,? said international matchmaker Johnny Elorde, the son of the great legendary Flash Elorde. ?He is a great fighter with great fighting spirit.? Mr. Elorde said Laurente is promoted under Top Rank. Meanwhile, the Elorde Annual Awards, now on its ninth year, honors world, international and national champions of the past year as well as the best boxing promoter, manager, trainer, best fight and individuals and institutions that helped promote Philippine professional boxing. And, one such potential international honoree is Dennis Laurente, a promising boxer whose potential may flourish soon in the international scene. The awards, the most prestigious in Philippine boxing, is regularly held by the Elorde clan, led by the late Elorde?s wife Laura, and Elorde Sports Foundation and sponsored by the Johnny Elorde International Management, Inc., Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corporation, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office and Manila Hotel.
