?Gerry, make it 3? By Epifanio M. Almeda PhilBoxing.com Sat, 25 Apr 2009 Filipino fight fans are still relishing the 2 stunning wins scored by Brian Villoria and Nonito Donaire, Jr. 6 days ago at the Araneta Coliseum. Make it 3 in a row, Gerry. Not many expected Brian to unseat then IBF light-flyweight champion Ulises Solis. Brian?s previous unsuccessful attempts to win back his WBC 108-lb title didn?t give much hope to the fans for Brian to conquer the fearsome Solis who was making his 9th title defence. The knockout ending was dramatic and Filipino boxing fans are still stunned by fight ending while it may no longer be the case to Solis by this time. Nonito was expected to win but not the way he did over the then unbeaten Raul Martinez who had 16 KO?s in his 24 previous wins without a loss record. Nonito showed why he is seriously considered as the crown prince to Manny Pacquiao who will also have his own big fight agains Ricky Hatton next week. Nonito fights intelligently. He is speedy and powerful. By knocking down Martinez 4 times in as many number of rounds that the fight lasted, Nonito affirmed further his stature as a superstar in the making which he established when he out boxed and then knock the likewise previously unbeaten and ferocious Vic Darchinyan off his throne. The way Nonito avoids his opponents? punches and the timeliness when he delivers his own made young boxing judge, Atty. Danrex Tapdasan, comment, ?Donaire makes boxing looks easy?. Three successive Sundays, April 19, 25 and May 3 (Philippine time), are big fight events for Filipino fight fans. Already, Brian and Nonito made them happy. Gerry can make it 3 tomorrow in Puerto Rico. While Gerry is indeed the best Filipino boxer in technical skills as Freddie roach testifies, there is one sound suggestion among fight fans for Gerry - be more aggressive when you stagger your opponent. Gerry might consider heeding this suggestion to help him make it 3 in his fight against WBO junior-featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez. Gerry has the punch to stagger the aggressive Lopez. ?When you stagger your opponent, pursue him and deliver the coup de grace. Don?t wait for him to return to take more punches from you which he will not do. Pursue your opponent and finish him off.? During the last 60 minutes of the 2nd round in his fight against Daniel Ponce de Leon, Gerry staggered Daniel with a counter right to the face but missed the opportunity of knocking him out when Gerry did not take another step forward to deliver the coup de grace. If Gerry delivers and make Juanma taste his first defeat, Gerry would make it as a 3-time and 3-division champion. In so doing, Gerry would also add to the Filipinos the euphoria which Brian and Nonito gave them last Sunday (Philippine time). Brian and Nonito delivered the 1-2. Gerry, make it 3.
