ABAP EXEC. DIRECTOR VISITS STA. CRUZ GYM TO FIND MORE TALENTS PhilBoxing.com Fri, 17 Apr 2009 CEBU CITY--Having already visited the famed ALA Gym and the RWS Gym in Cebu, Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) executive director Ed Picson did not leave any stone unturned in his group's quest to discover more young talents, as he continued his search by visiting the well-furbished Yani Sta. Cruz Gym yesterday in Talisay City. The gym, which is owned by Engr Yani Sta. Cruz, boasts as its chief trainer the renowned Nonito Donaire Sr, who hones the skills of young fighters being developed by sportsman Jonathan Guardo who is also the newly-appointed ABAP regional project director working closely with long-time ABAP Visayas head Nemie Monton. Also training at the gym are some of the stellar fighters under the Braveheart Stable of North Cotabato vice-governor Manny Pinol. "We will continue our search for young talents. We need people like you who are willing to pitch in and help discover them," Picson told Sta. Cruz in a chance meeting at the gym. Guardo was not at the gym during the meeting, as he had a prior commitment to attend to, but gladly welcomed Picson at his corporate office in Cebu City during lunch accompanied by local scribe Jun Migallen and Uniherb marketing boss Edwin Ratilla. Guardo, in a separate interview, revealed that he is looking forward to working closely with Picson and Monton in developing more talents in the region who can then become part of the national training pool and eventually represent the country in international meets. "I hope we can finally get that elusive Olympic gold under the new ABAP leadership. We are very confident of the chances, as the group is now run by corporate people who have a completely different approach to running our amateur boxing program," added Guardo.
