Raising the bar for Dennis Laurente, rated in the Philippines as the No.1 boxer in the lightweight division By Granville Ampong PhilBoxing.com Fri, 10 Apr 2009 HOLLYWOOD, California ? I am a curator of elusive little truths and this is my passion: Lifting the veil of inspiration to the gifted and to the deserving ones. Dennis Laurente (30-3-5, 16 knockouts) is one such athlete of deserving stature. His bearing spreads around him shadows of calmness and humility. But, he does not settle for less than what he thinks is expedient for now and then: embarking on a self-punishing regimen of training that can be viewed in historical term as astonishing. Conversely, his deep eyes penetrate the future for his third U.S. debut as to what must take place on May 2 as he fights against the undefeated Marvin ?Much Too Much? Cordova (20-0-1, 11 knockouts) of Las Vegas in a non-title match of the undercard of Pacquiao vs. Hatton at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Laurente, 31, a southpaw hailing from Palompon, Leyte, Philippines, is rated in the Philippines as the No. 1 boxer in the lightweight division. After impressively knocking out Steve ?The Mongoose? Quinonez of Palm Springs, California in round 4 on June 28, 2008 in the undercard of Pacquiao-Diaz fight at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada, he dashed off to win on September 25, 2008 by referee technical decision over another rugged Mexican fighter in Arturo Urena at the Sycuan Resort and Hotel in El Cajon, California. So upbeat for his second debut in the U.S., Laurente looked very quick and at times explosive as he carried most of the actions of the fight. Before the 7th, the fight was stopped on the advice of the ring physician due to multiple cuts under the left eye of Urena. Asked about what he thinks of his upcoming fight being overwhelmingly shielded by the popularity of Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton, he says: ?I am even much happier because their popularity adds flavor to my fight.? Laurente, a late bloomer in his own right, may just become another world champion in the days to come. He came to the U.S. under the blessings of his manager, Johnny Elorde. He is currently on training at the Wildcard Gym in Hollywood where legendary Pound-for-Pound King Manny Pacquiao, WBC International Featherweight Champion Abe Concepcion and WBC Super Bantamweight Champion Gerry Penalosa, are engaging their training sessions as well.
