CAN WE FILIPINOS BE UNITED FOR 12 ROUNDS? By Medeon Maraon PhilBoxing.com Sat, 28 Mar 2009 Uh-oh. It freaked me out when I read Nick Giongco's article about our idol, Manny Pacquiao, being emotionally hurt. That is not good news at all. Please, please, stop disrupting the concentration of Manny. He only has one month to prepare and he's got all these confusion swarming all over his head. Manny has shown his goodness inside and outside the ring. Let's not abuse his goodness. Let us support him as one nation. The problem with us Filipinos is this: we just can't be united. How sad. Looking back to those times when our country was under foreign rule, uprising after uprising took place in order for us to have freedom. They all failed because somebody from our own camp would eventually turn out to be a traitor. When Manny first fought the then powerful Marco Antonio Barrera, his first-ever tormentor placed a bet on the Mexican. What was his point in doing that? Manny is his fellow countryman and he won his fight against Manny anyway. Let's not envy our countrymen who are successful; let's be proud of them and support them. Before Manny fought the great Oscar De La Hoya last December, I wrote an article about David and Goliath. I THOUGHT every Filipino would agree with me because I THOUGHT every Filipino roots for Manny every time he fights. I was greatly mistaken! My father and I are die-hard De La Hoya fans. We would see to it that work, study, and play would take a backseat every time Oscar fights. When my girlfriend Cham asked me what gift I would like to have for our anniversary celebration, I wished for Oscar's book An American Son. But few months after I got that gift, it was announced that Oscar was gonna face Manny. I didn't know whether I was going to be happy or not; excitement was no longer a factor for me. It was like a basketball finals featuring my favorite PBA team San Miguel going up against my beloved Los Angeles Lakers. It was the first time I didn't support Oscar 100%. But I supported him 49.9%. Why did I favor Manny more even if the odds were against him? Because he's my countryman. I'm proud of him, win or lose. So, can we be united for just twelve rounds? Thank you ABS-CBN for your willingness to cooperate and make this dream match come true. Indeed, you are not called a giant network for nothing. Thank you GMA for your continued coverage of Manny Pacquiao's fights. Let us now be united in making Manny's preparation for his fight with Ricky Hatton a smooth and peaceful one. Let us set aside our pride and rally as one to make Manny win because Manny's victory is also our victory. The Bible says in Psalm 133:1, "How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!" Twelve rounds of unity. Let's savor it!
