Billy 'The Kid' Dib - Interview By Pj Magno De Best PhilBoxing.com Wed, 04 Mar 2009 (PJ) Hey Billy, How?s it been mate? Your first fight for 2009 is coming up on the 11th of March for the interim WBC World Youth featherweight title against fellow Australian Davey Browne; tell me, how has the training leading up to the fight been so far? (Dib) The training has been first rate and I?ve really enjoyed my preparation. I?ve boxed something like 200 rounds of spar work with a number of fighters and I feel ready to go. (PJ) Billy Hussein is now part of your team; how has that been so far and what has he brought to your team with regards to a fight plan or training methods? (Dib) Billy has just been awesome and I couldn?t speak highly enough of him. I?ve known Billy a long time and he?s always had a great reputation for his style and methods. He?s worked with world champions such Danny Green, Vic Darchinyan, Lovemore Ndou, etc and I can now appreciate first-hand how highly the talk about him and his work ethic. (PJ) Even though Davey Browne?s got an undefeated record, statistics show that you?re obviously his biggest fight to date. What do you expect from him in the ring on March 11 and do you think your ring experience may overwhelm him a bit? (Dib) I certainly don?t know if I will overwhelm him because he?s a tough fighter and called me out for the fight which show?s a lot, however I?m happy to step into the ring accepting that challenge. Yes I am potentially a big scalp for him, but in actual fact, I don?t plan to be. I?m very confident in my preparation and my ability and I plan to show Davey that on fight night. (PJ) Since Your decision loss to WBO featherweight champ Steven Luevano, what have you learned about yourself with regards to dealing with adversity in the world of boxing? (Dib) You learn more through loss ? both in life and in boxing through defeat more than any amount of wins. It?s funny, sometimes you lose, but you actually win and that?s where I?m at. (PJ) Supposing that you defeat Browne, who would you like next? (Dib) Supposing! Hahahahaha, I?ll beat Browne! No seriously, it might be a clich?, but put simply, one fight at a time and it?s my manager and trainers job to find me the right opponents. They are always planning for me and together we speak about short-term and long-term focus. My short-term is always the fight in front of me and together theirs is to be looking both in the immediate and future. They don?t want my job, and I don?t want theirs!!! Hahahahaha (PJ) Billy, you?re a deeply religious man and you?ve proven that by making the spiritual pilgrimage to Mecca. Tell me, how has your faith helped you to reevaluate your boxing career as a whole and make the necessary adjustments to fulfil your dreams? (Dib) Words can?t fully do Mecca justice as it ranges on a whole number of levels. Mecca also helped me look within following my loss, however I feel so much more complete for pursuing it and honouring my family and faith. (PJ) Your part of a very lucrative inner circle in boxing that consists of close friends like Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins, Prince Naseem Hamed and Oscar De La Hoya to name a few. How have you been able to stay humble whilst rolling with these guys and has their presence elevated you to another level in boxing? (Dib) I am very fortunate to have built up fantastic friendships with the names you mentioned and I feel privileged that boxing has provided me with this. Staying humble, that?s easy. When you meet the likes of these guys, you find how humble they really are and how they appreciate everything they have. You can?t help but learn watching them conduct themselves away from the ring, how they prepare for bouts and ultimately what they achieve in the ring and this just motivates you to continue developing as it?s hopefully a reflection of how they have taught you and you embraced their teaching?s. (PJ) Who has been your most difficult fight to date and why? (Dib) Zolani Morali when I won my IBO Super-Featherweight title. I threw everything at him and he threw everything at me. We just went at it and he never stops! A hard fight, but I loved every minute of it! (PJ) What is your motivation for not only your upcoming fight but for your boxing career as a whole? (Dib) To honour my Mum and Dad, my brothers and sister and all my family, my trainer and manager?s faith and my close friends like Eddie who support me and my career and to hopefully achieve my goal of winning another world-title, one fight at a time! My manager and I always say to each other ? ?ROME?, because like the old saying goes - ?Rome wasn?t built in a day?. At 23, we have time to build and build. (PJ) Any parting words for your fans out there? (Dib) Thank you very much for supporting me, I really do appreciate it and I plan to repay your support in the future with some great performances and like I said, working towards getting my title back. Thank you to BoxingRepublic.com for the opportunity to talk with you. You?ve got a great boxing website and I enjoy getting on and catching up with everything on there.
