PSA Foundation Established

PhilBoxing.com

WITH emphasis on the role of sportswriters in molding and promoting Philippine sports, a foundation will henceforth be established in behalf of the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA).

Business magnate Manny V. Pangilinan pledged P 1 million in initial fund to bankroll and establish the institution expected to benefit the country?s sportswriting fraternity.

Pangilinan, the man credited for the success of the Philippine Long Distance Company and the Smart Communications Incorporation, gave the assurance during the San Miguel Corporation-PSA Annual Awards Night Friday at the Alegria Lounge of the Manila Pavilion, where he was the guest of honor and recipient of the Sports Patron of the Year award handed out by the men and women of the PSA.

?Seldom do sportswriters get the benefit of a foundation. So in behalf of Smart Communications, we?re spearheading the establishment of an organization which would benefit sportswriters. I?m handing out a P1 million fund to get this PSA foundation started,? said Pangilinan in a surprise announcement that followed his well-meaning speech during the simple, two-hour rite honoring the best of Philippine sports in 2008.

The financial package guaranteed by the business whiz they fondly called MVP proved to be just the tip of the iceberg.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Harry Angping also donated P500,000 to the cause of the 60-year old media organization, the oldest in the country.

And taking the cue, boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao, recipient of the 2008 PSA Athlete of the Year award, pitched in another P 1 million that elicited a round of applause from members of the sportswriting community.

?Ito ay tulong at alay ko na rin sa mga Filipino sportswriters na naging malaking bahagi ng aking tagumpay sa boksing,? said the generous ring idol from General Santos City.

Aldrin Cardona, PSA president and sports editor of the Daily Tribune, extended his heartfelt thanks to Pangilinan, the PSC and Pacquiao in behalf of members of the organization.

?We truly appreciate the kindness offered by these fine gentlemen to the entire PSA,? he said of the P2.5 million financial pledge received by the media group on this truly wonderful night.

Highlight of the affair sponsored by the Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) was the handling out of the Athlete of the Year title to Pacquiao and his elevation to the PSA Hall of Fame.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose `Peping Cojuangco, joined Angping, Cardona and Mike Cendana, AVP for licensed casino enforcement department of PAGCOR, in awarding the trophies to Pacquiao, the current world pound-for-pound fighter and the only Filipino and Asian boxer to win world titles in four different weight classes.

Major awards were also handed out to athletes in different sports for their brilliant exploits in the year just passed, among them include golfers Jennifer Rosales, Dorothy Delasin, Angelo Que, Dottie Ardina, world boxing champion Nonito Donaire Jr, wushu artist Willy Wang, cager Kelly Williams, pool idol Dennis Orcollo, champion jockey Jonathan Hernandez and horses Go Army and Ibarra.

Senator Manny Villar also graced the occasion as recipient of the PSA President?s Award during the program supported by the Villar Foundation, Senator Francis `Chiz? Escudero, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Shakey?s, Accel, PBA, PBL, NCRAA, PCSO, SBP, Purefoods, Ginebra, Alaska, Sta. Lucia, Rain or Shine, Ever Bilena, Harbour Centre, Liga Pilipinas, Secretary Lito Atienza, Pharex, GAB and Mighty Sports Association.
