PSA Foundation Established PhilBoxing.com Sun, 22 Feb 2009 WITH emphasis on the role of sportswriters in molding and promoting Philippine sports, a foundation will henceforth be established in behalf of the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA). Business magnate Manny V. Pangilinan pledged P 1 million in initial fund to bankroll and establish the institution expected to benefit the country?s sportswriting fraternity. Pangilinan, the man credited for the success of the Philippine Long Distance Company and the Smart Communications Incorporation, gave the assurance during the San Miguel Corporation-PSA Annual Awards Night Friday at the Alegria Lounge of the Manila Pavilion, where he was the guest of honor and recipient of the Sports Patron of the Year award handed out by the men and women of the PSA. ?Seldom do sportswriters get the benefit of a foundation. So in behalf of Smart Communications, we?re spearheading the establishment of an organization which would benefit sportswriters. I?m handing out a P1 million fund to get this PSA foundation started,? said Pangilinan in a surprise announcement that followed his well-meaning speech during the simple, two-hour rite honoring the best of Philippine sports in 2008. Aldrin Cardona, PSA president and sports editor of the Daily Tribune, extended his heartfelt thanks to Pangilinan, the PSC and Pacquiao in behalf of members of the organization. ?We truly appreciate the kindness offered by these fine gentlemen to the entire PSA,? he said of the P2.5 million financial pledge received by the media group on this truly wonderful night.
