Gary Shaw not indispensable to Darchinyan-Donaire rematch By Granville Ampong PhilBoxing.com Mon, 09 Feb 2009 The Darchinyan vs. Arce post-fight press conference spurs grim prospect in the sport of boxing. Garry Shaw impressed me when he tells us, the media, about his health status being a survivor from prostate cancer. I thought I came to the post-fight press conference to hear what would somehow bring boxing to its heights. But he preaches the imminence of two conflicting forces: healing vs. fuming anger. While he is no longer battling with cancer, he still decries and holds himself unforgiving and faultless in regards to the controversy over his aborted contract with Nonito Donaire, Jr. Shaw is still bitter after Donaire left him to join a much-bigger promoter in Bob Arum of Top Rank. Shaw branded Donaire as ?disloyal? and said he should not be given another crack at Darchinyan. ?No, Donaire doesn't have a chance. He's disloyal, and disloyal people shouldn't be rewarded,? Shaw tells the press. Nonetheless, he tells us at the outset that after this press conference we should go home and hug our love ones knowing how precious life is. And it sounds like I am hearing from a man whose heart has fountain of forgiveness. But when one questions about the prospect of a rematch between Donaire and Darchinyan, he fumes up and impolitely stops the reporter from furthering the inquiry. It was hilarious. And surely it is not good for boxing. It is, in fact, an egocentric attempt to dry out what the trend has just beginning to smooth out for a rematch between the two. Rather, it should be beneficial to both fighters and boxing fans. And so he is not going to reward a disloyal fighter such as Nonito Donaire, Jr., he confesses furiously. Now, if Mr. Shaw sets the trend for boxing, then the welfare of many boxing fighters would be jeopardized. And so the revival of the sports of boxing may remain an idealistic reverie. But, whether you like it or not, there will always be discontentment, disillusionment and disenchantment among the fighters. Vic ?The Raging Bull? Darchinyan, the current IBF,WBC, WBA Super Flyweight Champion, is a ferocious, talented and dynamic fighter. He is willing to fight Donaire who handed him his first professional loss via brutal knock out in the round 5. And Darchinyan wants it badly to establish and assert his prominence in the lower weight class, he tells us. ?I need a rematch with Donaire,? said Darchinyan who won over Jorge Arce of Mexico via stoppage moments ago. ?But I must work with Gary Shaw as a team.? ?If he doesn?t want me to fight Donaire, then I respect his decision,? he added. Meanwhile, Darchinyan is now targeting a fight with Israel Vazquez, the current WBC Super Bantamweight Champion. Initial negotiation for the two fighters will soon follow. Conversely, the outcome of a rematch between Darchinyan and Donaire, if Shaw?s anger edges into the stage of bargaining, should dispel doubts as to whether their first encounter was just a fluke or not. Suppressing the tide of excitement is neither healthy to the boxing world nor to the aging Shaw. Is Shaw an indispensable figure to make this purported rematch to happen? How long would Dachinyan bear his nightmare syndrome that forever haunts him wherever he goes? Yes, Donaire is not indispensable for the glory of Darchinyan. But, I sense that the unresolved anger of Shaw has gone to metastasize the world of Darchinyan. Should Darchinyan confine his urging to Shaw?s onerous, poignant wish?
