Fresh from the Margarito-Mosley Pre-fight Press Conference By Granville Ampong PhilBoxing.com Sat, 24 Jan 2009 STAPLES CENTER, LOS ANGELES, California - - No bullshit! It is not even one of arithmetic. It defies the economic meltdown. Boxing is alive! Antonio Margarito (37-5-0, with 27 KO?s) of Tijuana, Mexico and Shane Mosley(45-5-0, 38 KO?s) of Pomona, California have drilled today more than a hundred credentialed journalists about their coming fight this Saturday, January 24 at the Staples Centers in Los Angeles, California, of which this writer is one of the only two journalists representing Filipino publications. But, the prevailing talks in the network before the press conference started centered on the impending Pacquiao-Hatton fight on May 2. ?Pacquiao-Hatton fight will surely happen,? said Bob Arum, the Top Rank Godfather who originally was intent on 50-50 share proposal to shine on. ?It?s just we made a mistake by giving Manny Pacquiao the ultimatum last Wednesday, which practically doesn?t work for Filipinos. However, Filipinos are very resilient people.? ?And, Filipinos do not care very much about money and I believe Manny will agree on a 52-48 share to his favor,? said Arum. ?Really, it?s not about who has the most money in the fight. It?s about respect, and I cannot blame him feeling that way. We will come to his terms.? Meanwhile, Arum spelled out a one-sided portrayal about the Margarito-Mosley fight, which has already sold more than 17,000 tickets as of 11:30 a.m. today. Despite the boxing skills and speed advantages of Mosley, he believes ?Margarito will outwork Mosley? in their 12-round WBA Welterweight Championship at 147 pounds. In other words, Margarito will land more punches than Mosley whom he thought as the less fresher fighter. ?But, it will take a monumental effort on his part to knock Mosley out.? He added. In fact, Mosley is thought to be better than Margarito in terms of eye coordination through which a fighter sees as to when the punch is coming forth. ?He is quicker than Margarito.? Said Richard Schaefer when asked by this writer about what he thinks of Mosley. ?I really believe Mosley has a better chance than what Cotto did,? said Bob Hopkins, a promotional partner of Mosley with the Golden Boy Promotions. Cotto, to whom Mosley loss by unanimous decision, was handed his first professional defeat in the hands of Margarito via TKO in the 11th early last year. ?And I really believe that some guys have better chances than other guys. And don?t count out Mosley.? Upbeat that he is, Mosley kept his guard with much respect to his opponent. He praised Margarito and thanked him for making the fight pushed through. And rightly so, Margarito is a type of fighter ?who walks in the ring and comes at you like a tornado - just like his nickname?. But, ?I am prepared for his style,? said Mosley. ?And I know he is so beloved now by the Mexican people because of the way he fights bearing rare determination.? ?Margarito, a Torrance-born Chicano, bolters tremendous attraction on a certain level. Each of his fight is interesting, compelling and ?no bullshit?, according to Arum. But, in the sport of boxing, the purported rivalry between African-Americans and Mexicans seems to resurrect when it all goes into the mix where the intensity of rivalry stems in part not one of hatred but competitiveness, hard-hitting battles and commendable sportsmanship between the two Southern Californian fighters. Scaling ?every mountain there was to climb?, Mosley fought his way to world championships at lightweight, welterweight (twice) and junior middleweight. He became known as the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing and has become a household name to boxing enthusiasts. Mosley defeated Oscar de la Hoya, the Golden Boy, twice. And eventually he became a business partner of the Golden Boy Promotions, Inc. Nonetheless, whatever would the outcome be, let us face it: The hyping has begun for this Saturday. And at the end of that day, we will know whose skills will prevail. Margarito vs. Mosley, a 12-round bout for the WBA Welterweight Championship, is promoted by Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and Southwest Airlines. The event will be televised live on HBO?s World Championship Boxing at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time/7:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Remaining tickets, priced at $ 150, $75, $50 and $25, are on sale at all Ticket Master outlets, by phone at 213-480-3232 , online at www.ticketmaster.com and at STAPLES CENTER box office.
