ROLANDO MAGBANUA FIGHTS MEXICO'S JOSE COTA FOR WBO INTERIM ORIENTAL BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE PhilBoxing.com Fri, 16 Jan 2009 Magbanua (L) and Cota North Cotabato bantamweight prospect Rolando Magbanua takes on Mexico's Jose Angel Cota in a 12-round interim championship bout for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) 118-lb. title Feb. 21 at the Mandaue Sports Center in Mandaue City, Island of Cebu. Magbanua, 23, a former member of the Philippine national amateur boxing team and a college student who dropped out of school to pursue a boxing career, will be making a first attempt to win an international boxing title in only his 14th professional fight. Called the "Smooth Operator" for his fluid and artful boxing style, Magbanua, a native of Pigcawayan, North Cotabato, has a professional record of 13 wins without a loss, with 8 KOs. Jose Angel Cota, called "Bocho" by his handlers, fights out of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico and holds a record of 8 wins, 6 by KO, with 3 losses. Cota lost twice in his last four fights but his two victories came by way of first round knockout. Magbanua and Cota will fight for the WBO bantamweight title which was temporarily vacated by the Philippines' Michael Domingo who is on medical leave following a medical diagnosis in the US which found him to be positive for Hepatitis B. The Magbanua-Cota fight will be one of the four exciting bantamweight bouts which will be headlined by WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa who is preparing for his April 24 fight against Puerto Rican sensation Juan Manuel Lopez, the WBO superbantamweight champion. North Cotabato Vice Gov. Manny Pinol who is promoting the Feb. 21 fight with the support of Cebu-based boxing men Rex Wakee Salud and Sammy Gelloani, said Gerry's opponent will be known this week. Gerry earlier expressed preference for Mexico's Heriberto Ruiz but was informed that Ruiz has a scheduled fight in Canada in March. Also appearing in the "Battle of the Best Bantamweights" card is Jundy "Pretty Boy" Maraon, 23, of Suminot, Zamboanga del Sur, who will fight compatriot Jason Igera, the reigning WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight champion. Maraon has a record of 12 wins and 1 draw with 9 KOs. Another bantamweight from M'lang, North Cotabato, Glenn "The Rock" Porras, also 23 years old, will fight Thailand's Daothon Sissuey in 10 rounds. Porras has a record of 18 wins, 2 losses, with 12 KOs. Six other top boxers from Mindanao, including the undefeated jr. lightweight Glenn "Rapid Fire" Gonzales, 23 (8 wins, 1 draw, 4 KOs); featherweight Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva, 22 (12 wins, 12 KOs); jr. flyweight Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong, 23 (16 wins, 2 losses, 12 KOs); and miniflyweight Rommel "Little Assassin" Asenjo, 19, (11 wins, 2 losses, 8 KOs) will also see action in the Mandaue City card. The bouts will be shown by ABS CBN and The Filipino Channel. |
