MARAON WINS; VILLANUEVA SCORES 12TH KO PhilBoxing.com Tue, 13 Jan 2009 Bantamweight prospect Jundy "Pretty Boy" Maraon sent veteran Ruben Santillanosa crashing to the canvas in the first round with a stunning left and went on to win by Unanimous Decision in 10 rounds in a small boxing card in Makilala, North Cotabato Saturday, Jan. 10. It was the 23-year-old Maraon's second victory in less than a month following a first round knockout win scored Dec. 21 as he prepares for his Feb. 21 title fight with World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific Champion Jason Egera in Mandaue City. "This was a very good tune up fight for Jundy especially so since he had an 18-month lay off before his December fight," said Braveheart Boxing Club chief trainer Noli Pinol. Maraon improved his record to 12 wins, 1 draw with 9 knockouts and positioned himself as one of the possible successors of WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa who will also appear in the Feb. 21 fight against a Mexican champion. Featherweight Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva, 22, raw but tremendously powerful, scored his 12 knockout victory in as many professional fights with a second round trashing of Philip Jun Demicillo in another 10-round bout. The 5' 7" tall Villanueva has remained unbeaten and is fast gaining a following in the sport. North Cotabato Vice Gov. Manny Pinol, who manages both Maraon and Villanueva, however, said that it will take sometime before the southpaw from Midsayap town will figure in important fights. "We still need to fight tune him. He is very raw and he tends to be very careless inside the ring relying mainly on his power," Vice Gov. Pinol said. In the other bouts of the small boxing card beefed up by eight amateur bouts, Rommel "Little Assassin" Asenjo, 19, unleashed a thunderous left to the solar plexus of the game Roel Honor to end the 10-round fight in the 3rd. The miniflyweight fighter from Pigcawayan town in North Cotabato improved his record to 11 wins, 2 losses, with 9 KOs. Former amateur standout Jermie Jabel scored a KO win in the 2nd improving his record to 9 wins and 1 draw with 7 KOs while Richard Betos, who earlier lost to bantamweight prospect Rolando Magbanua by decision, came back with a 6-round decision victory over Jun Morano. |
