THE HITMAN IS ALSO CALLED ?RICKY FATTON? By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sun, 11 Jan 2009 Ricky Hatton has another nickname conferred on him by his boxing fans: "Ricky Fatton." This is because the British boxing idol will not control his weight that could reach to 175 to 180 pounds. This is 35 to 40 pounds over his ideal fighting weight when he is not in training for a fight. Hatton likes to eat a full English breakfast before his professional fights. He is compared to Jake La Motta who also ballooned himself up in between fights. Boxing experts referred to his poor balanced diet as the cause of his mediocre performances in his latest outings and his tendency to lose steam in the later rounds of his fights. The 2005 Fighter of the Year guested on a TV show in August 2007 and defended his putting on weight between fights saying "I have a lot on my plate at the moment." Hatton cited that he plans to retire within the next four major bouts. Regarding his original nickname, Ricky said that he has always been a fan of Tommy Hearns and his supporters associated him with the boxing legend from Detroit, Michigan. He added that time everybody was a Tommy Hearns fan. ?I got the nickname the first day I walked in the gym. I was 10 years old and put a pair of gloves on and started walloping the bag, and my amateur coach said, 'Look at him, look how evil he is. He's a little Hitman?.? His other nicknames are The Manchester Mexican and The Pride of Hyde. He is from Hyde, Manchester, England. On January 1, 2007 Ricky was recognized by the Queen of England in the annual New Year's honors? list, and received the title MBE (Member of the British Empire). The ceremony took place at Buckingham Palace, and with the reputation, he will now be acknowledged as Ricky Hatton, MBE. Ricky had an outstanding year in 2005 when he was voted "Fighter of the Year? by The Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring Magazine. He is the first-ever British boxer to receive The Ring Fighter of the Year award since its inauguration in 1928. Hatton is venerated by millions of fans who are very outspoken and fanatic in their support during his fights. They have invented a main chant which is a modified version of the popular Christmas song "Winter Wonderland", and the lyrics transformed to prop up Hatton.
