HATTON IS ONE GOOD FIGHTER By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Wed, 31 Dec 2008 Richard "Ricky" Hatton is groomed to be Manny Pacquiao?s next foe. There was no formal signing of contracts yet but negotiations are underway. But we need to know more about the British boxing idol. More commonly known as "The Hitman," Hatton was on born October 6, 1978 in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. Hatton is a two-time IBF and IBO light welterweight champion and was also the WBA welterweight champion. He is also the former WBU, WBA light welterweight champion and WBC, WBA, WBO inter-continental light welterweight junior welterweight champion, and current Ring Magazine champion. Hatton had the first taste of the limelight in the world boxing when he beat Kostya Tszyu, who was at that time one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world. Hatton won by TKO when the Australian failed to answer the bell for the 12th round. The Hitman was the great underdog during this fight, and the triumph signalled his entrance to the popular list of the big names in boxing. Hatton won the WBA light welterweight title when he defeated Carlos Maussa in the ninth round of a unification bout and after that he was named the 2005 Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year. He faced Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a fight which was considered as the biggest welterweight fight since the Oscar de la Hoya-Felix Trinidad tussle. Mayweather sent Hatton to the canvas in Round 10, but he got up, which persuaded Pretty Boy immediately to carry on his attack, resulting in the referee stopping the fight, and Hatton's corner throwing in the towel. Mayweather praised his foe in the post-match that "Ricky Hatton is one tough fighter. He is still a champion in my eyes and I'd love to fight him again. Ricky Hatton is probably one of toughest competitors I've faced. I hit him with some big ones but he kept coming and I can see why they call him the 'Hitman'. His last fight was a convincing victory over Paulie Malignaggi of the United States at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas last November 22 for Hatton's IBO light welterweight title and Ring Magazine light welterweight title.
