THE RESURRECTION OF KING DAVID IN MANNY PACQUIAO By Medeon Maraon PhilBoxing.com Tue, 09 Dec 2008 ?De La Hoya-Pacquiao. This is David and Goliath all over again.? Those were my final words in my article ?A Closer Look at King David and Manny Pacquiao.? Some people loved the idea. Some people didn?t, thinking I was already losing my mind. I should have written that article after the fight last night, when the slaying of the giant was over. But it has been said. And it came to pass. Oops!... David did it again. Manny Pacquiao. WOW! That was a sensational performance! Your critics were wrong once again. Hands down, you are the world?s best boxer today. No wonder Oscar De La Hoya wanted to dance his final dance with you. No wonder Ricky Hatton (England?s best) wants to trade bombs with you. No wonder people are coaxing Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (former pound-for-pound king) to come out of retirement. No wonder you are being compared to King David. When the Israelites saw the young David get ready for battle, they thought his clash with Goliath was going to be a mismatch. Ditto with the Philistines. They probably roared in laughter when they saw the little guy walk up towards the giant. The same thing happened to the De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight. Boxing experts criticized the idea of pitting a little guy against a bigger and stronger guy who?s known for his power. Even some of Manny?s countrymen thought he was going to get clobbered. Indeed, it was a mismatch. Poor giants! David was known to be a man after God?s own heart. He talked about God when he came face to face with Goliath (1 Samuel 17:45-47). Manny did the same thing. It?s his routine to kneel and pray in one corner of the ring before and after his fights. In his post-fight interviews, he doesn?t fail to mention God who gives him the power and the victory. I?ve heard other boxers in the past who would talk about God. But they would insult and embarrass their fallen opponents afterwards. I don?t think God is happy to hear people use His holy name without reflecting His character in their lives. Humility - a trait David and Manny share, a trait you and me ought to have. It was not an accident that David came out victorious the day he slew the giant. Yes, he was a last minute replacement but he didn?t train over night. He trained for days and months, and maybe years, by killing lions and bears. He was spiritually, physically, and mentally prepared when he faced Goliath. That?s what Manny did. He didn?t just show up at the Wild Card office of his coach Freddie Roach the night before his historic demolition of De La Hoya. He?s been in Coach Roach?s gym for two, grueling months. His preparation was painstaking and overwhelming. That?s why he was triumphant when the smoke cleared. World-class talent without hard work and faith is nothing. After watching De La Hoya-Pacquiao last night, I could clearly say David came back from the grave. Manny Pacquiao showed us what it was like when David met Goliath. David is one of my favorite Bible characters and it has been my childhood dream to see him fight Goliath. It?s a dream no more. I saw it with my two eyes. I saw David slaughter Goliath. I?ve said it before and I?m gonna say it again: a little guy with a big heart and a BIG GOD is guaranteed to win. Hail King David! Hail King Manny!
