Pacquiao Has Already Won By Carlo Pamintuan PhilBoxing.com Sat, 06 Dec 2008 The wait is finally over. The fight the country has been waiting for is finally here. A lot has been written and said about this fight and a lot more will be written after. But amidst all of that, it is sure that Manny Pacquiao, win, lose, or draw, will come out as a winner after this fight. An old adage in boxing says that a good big man will always beat a good small man. With this alone, it is already apparent that Pacquiao is at an immense disadvantage. Pacquiao debuted at 106 pounds while his adversary started his career at 135 pounds, the weight class that Pacquiao tried out only once. Oscar de la Hoya has openly said that it will be a disaster if he fails to knockout his much smaller foe. Pacquiao, on the other hand, continues to be his usual humble self sticking to his patented ?I won?t predict a knockout, I?ll just give my best? spiel. Pacquiao is also performing in the grandest stage in his career. Never had the lights shined this bright and perhaps they never will again. He also has the chance to strut his stuff in front of the biggest crowd he has ever seen and although de la Hoya maybe bringing along more supporters, it cannot be denied that if Pacquiao performs well, he could very well win over a few de le Hoya diehards and this could ultimately mean that more people will watch his matches in the future. Pacquiao has headlined many pay-per-views but he has never shared the spotlight with a superstar like de la Hoya, no offense meant to all who have faced Pacquiao before. Another reason why Pacquiao is already a winner is that what he?ll be making in this fight is more than what he?d make in two fights at 135. There is no other fight in boxing that could make this much money for Pacquiao, not even a showdown with the supposedly retired Floyd ?Money? Mayweather, who was the pound-for-pound ruler before him. Maybe the biggest factor why Pacquiao is already a winner is that he is going into this fight without any pressure. In his past few fights, Pacquiao needed to win and there were no ifs or buts about it. His standing would have taken a huge hit if he lost against Juan Manuel Marquez or even David Diaz, but a loss to de le Hoya would not really hurt Pacquiao?s status, some pundits even say that even if Pacquiao loses, there is still a chance that he?d keep his pound-for-pound status. A win, however, will catapult Pacquiao to heights that he may have never dreamed of. A top 50 of all time status would already be given and a few more big wins may lead him even higher in the list of all time greats. The risk-reward ratio has never been this good for Pacquiao and, again, perhaps they never will. Win, lose, or draw, Pacquiao will end up being in a better place than he was before this fight. Some may agree with his choice of opponent while many feel that a rematch with Marquez or maybe fights with Nate Campbell or Juan Diaz should have been the step Pacquiao took next. Still, all of Pacquiao?s fans should be grateful because he chose, quite literally, the biggest challenge out there. The whole country should just enjoy watching him this Sunday and maybe even say a prayer or two. Pacquiao has given the country a great gift and as it known that he is already in the twilight of his career, all Filipinos should cherish the last few times Pacquiao will display of the sweet science for it is sure that another Manny Pacquiao will not come within this lifetime.
