Philippines Rolls Past Pacific Oceania in Davis Cup Group IV Opener as Cebuana Lhuillier Ambassadors Set the Pace PhilBoxing.com Wed, 16 Jul 2025 The Philippine Men’s Davis Cup Team opened its Asia/Oceania Group IV campaign on a high note in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, scoring a 3-0 sweep over Pacific Oceania to boost its bid for promotion to Group III. The team—led by Cebuana Lhuillier tennis ambassadors Alberto "AJ" Lim Jr., Francis Casey Alcantara, and Ruben Gonzales—is eyeing one of two coveted promotion slots as it competes against Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Qatar, Iraq, and Nepal. Cebuana Lhuillier-backed AJ Lim gave the Philippines its first point with a confident 7-5, 6-1 win over Nickolas Ngodrela in the Singles 1 match. The former national junior standout controlled the baseline and dictated tempo throughout, setting the tone for the tie. Fellow Filipino Eric Olivarez, stepping up in Singles 2, delivered another point for the country with a composed 6-4, 6-3 victory over Gillian Osmont. While not part of the Cebuana Lhuillier tennis stable, Olivarez’s win showcased the depth of the squad and its readiness for top-tier play. The sweep was completed in the doubles match by the battle-tested pair of Francis Casey Alcantara and Ruben Gonzales. The Cebuana Lhuillier ambassadors combined their trademark chemistry and veteran poise to outplay Brett Baudinet and Maka Ofati, 7-5, 6-2, sealing the tie and giving the Philippines a strong start in round-robin play. “We’re thrilled with AJ Lim’s strong start and decisive win—it was a great momentum builder for the team,” said Jean Henri Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier, head of Unified Tennis Philippines, and a former Davis Cup team manager. “We’re equally proud of Niño and Ruben, who continue to be a reliable and powerful force in doubles. With this performance and depth across the roster, I believe the Philippines will emerge victorious until the end.” The Davis Cup Group IV tournament splits the eight participating countries into two pools of four. The top team from each group will play the second-placed team from the opposite group in a promotion playoff, with the winners advancing to Group III. The rest will play classification matches to determine final rankings.-Marlon Bernardino- ![]() |
