GM Antonio to compete in Taiwan chessfest

Ozamis City— Thirteen-time Philippine Open champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. is set to compete in the 2025 Chinese Taipei Chess Association (CTCA) international Chess Championships, scheduled from July 17 to 21, 2025, in Taipei, Taiwan.

"I hope to do well in this event (Taiwan) and gain some Elo rating points," said the Quezon City resident Antonio.

The 63-year-old grandmaster recently finished 1st place in the Battle of the Champions of the 5th Asenso Ozamis Chess Open last Saturday in Ozamis City.

For his feat in a 10 player tournament using the Armageddon format, Antonio won the top purse of P50,000, courtesy of Gov. Henry S. Oaminal, Mayor Sam Fuentes, Cong. Ando Oaminal and Cong. Indy Oaminal Jr. of Asenso Pinoy Party list through the Asenso Misamis Occidental Chess Association headed by Arena Grandmaster Rey Urbiztondo.

He also topped the premier rapid division of the Asenso Ozamis Open chess tournament last Sunday.

The Olympiad veteran was flawless with seven wins and two draws to finish eight points, enough to clinch the top purse worth P100,000.

"I would like to thank Gov. Henry S. Oaminal, Mayor Sam Fuentes, Cong. Ando Oaminal and Cong. Indy Oaminal of Asenso Pinoy Party list not only for sponsoring the tournament but they double all the prizes for winners plus P2,000 for all participants," said Antonio who also won eight medals at the 23rd ASEAN+Age Group Chess Championships in Penang, Malaysia last July 1 to 11.

Antonio, claimed four gold medals and two silver medals in the men's 50+ category.

It shall be recalled that Antonio finished runner-up in the Melbourne International Open Rapid Chess Championships held from April 7 to 9 at the Melbourne Chess Club.

He also placed fourth in the Premier Division of the 2025 O2C Doeberl Cup Standard competition, held April 17 to 21 in Canberra, Australia.

Antonio, dubbed as The Iron Man and Captain America of Philippine Chess is also set to compete in the FIDE (World Chess Federation) World Seniors Chess Championships scheduled from Oct. 20 to Nov. 2 in Puglia, Italy.-Marlon Bernardino-
