?All ?Manny? to Give? By Epifanio M. Almeda PhilBoxing.com Thu, 04 Dec 2008 Reading articles these past days about Manny Pacquiao giving away, sharing more of his many blessings to others brings to mind the title of an older movie ?All mine to give?. On thanksgiving in the US Manny gave away 500 turkeys. Later he gave away cash ?rewards? to his Wild Card Gym training camp friends who were able to lose weight within a given number of days. A colleague expressed amazement when he read of Manny?s giving away US$550,000 worth of fight tickets for Filipino friends to be able to see live his December 6 fight with Oscar dela Hoya. US$550,000 is not a small fortune in the Philippines. Why is Manny ?overly generous? as a sportswriter observed? A valid guess of an answer is that giving is addictive to the giver. Giving makes the giver happy. In many occasions, the giver is happier than the recipient of the generosity. And the genuine giver does not seem to run out of things to give. Indeed, ?it is more blessed to give than to receive?. Just look at Manny Pacquiao. The 27 Nov 2008 article ?MANNY PACQUIAO CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT?, http://philboxing.com/news/story-20257.html, was more of a discussion on the Manny-Oscar fight. But among the nine or so participant sportswriters, only Robert Morales? questions were directed on Manny?s giving attitude. The questions and the answers Manny and Bob Arum gave this reader will long remember. ?Robert Morales: Manny why do you give so much money and other things away to your Filipino countrymen and countrywomen? ?Manny Pacquiao: You know what? Our mission in this world - because I believe our mission in this world is not only to make money but we have a big responsibility. If you get the blessing from God, we are to give some of to your people and especially the poor people.? ?Robert Morales: Bob - correct me if I?m wrong. I think one time a while back you told me that Manny is overly generous. And you weren?t saying anything negative about him. You were saying that it was a positive thing. ?As his promoter do you have that concern that Freddie voiced on ?24/7? about Manny giving away too much? ?Bob Arum: No. Manny keeps referring to God. And, you know, God touches certain people. And when He touches those people and gives them great ability they then feel that in response they have to give back. And the only way they can give back is to their fellow human beings. ?And so I know Manny feels that way and I think he?s blessed that he has that view about life and his place in the scheme of things. So I?m very, very supportive of any and all kinds of charity that Manny does because I think Manny knows deep down that God will provide.? Manny gave away world titles While other Filipino fighters failed to win world titles and a champion even lost his in a title defense, Manny was giving away his. Manny won the WBC 130-lb crown last March but gave it up to move up in weight. He succeeded in winning the WBC 135-lb title and he is giving it up, if he has not done it already. Winning two world titles within a span of 4 months (March-June 2008) and give them up just as soon is a feat too difficult for another Filipino to even duplicate and, more so, surpass. By giving these titles up, Manny gave the other title contenders easier chances to win them than if they were to fight him for the said titles. As Bob Arum aptly puts it, ?So I?m very, very supportive of any and all kinds of charity that Manny does because I think Manny knows deep down that God will provide.? When Manny shares his many blessings to others, especially the less fortunate, he will be provided to enable him to give more. And he can always say he has ?All ?Manny? to give?.
