MARQUEZ? VICTORY IS TOO LITTLE TOO LATE

PhilBoxing.com

Las Vegas, NV:- Juan Manuel Marquez last Saturday night at the MGM Grand Arena in this city, took away Joel Casamayor?s Ring Lightweight title is a scintillating fashion.

Marquez knocked down Casamayor twice enroute to an 11th round TKO with five seconds remaining in the round. Thus Marquez became the first man ever to TKO Casamayor.

When Marquez scored the victory, he was leading (97-93) in one of the judges? score card (Glenn Feldman) but the other two judges Paul Smith and Patricia Morse Jarman had the fight even at 95-95 each. So, up to the point when the TKO suddenly happened, the fight could have gone either way.

At the PressCon after the fight, Jaime Quintana, a Marquez team main man, in response to a query from the media again indicated that Marquez did not lose to Manny Pacquiao when they fought their second fight and he said that they are ready for a trilogy anytime if it ?can be arranged.? Read:- if the price is right.

But Quintana is just wishful thinking. Even with the title Juan Ma earned tonight, and in spite of how brilliant was his victory against Casamayor, it will be a long time before he will even be considered as an opponent for the Pacman.

The Marquez victory over Casamayor is just too little too late to merit a second look from Team Pacquiao. The mathematics in a Pacquiao-Marquez trilogy just does not seem right at the moment. Thus, Marquez is not in the immediate future sight of Pacquiao. In fact, some reports indicate that ?Pacquiao is finished with Marquez.?

Be that as it may, Marquez? victory is non-the-less going to be talk of the town particularly by people who feel that after tonight?s performance, the least he deserves is a trilogy with Pacquiao. But the best choice there is perhaps a fight with either with Nate Campbell, Julio Diaz, Baby Bull Juan Diaz, or even Michael Katsidis. Or perhaps, even a re-match with Casamayor himself.

As for a fight with Pacquiao, don?t hold your breath. It?s too far distant to happen. Pacquiao is now contemplating a self ?imposed retirement. He said he will have two more fights after the December 6th date with de la Hoya. If he wins, the next is with Ricky Hatton. After that, it may be Valero or even Juan Diaz who just recently beat Katsidis.. Marquez is not in the cue unless of course the Golden Boy can offer an insane amount on money to force a Pacquiao-Marquez trilogy because as the crowd showed last night, he too can not draw people to fill up an arena. (Last night?s crowd was just over 7000)

Will the Golden Boy cough up the cash?

No one knows for sure.

One thing that can possibly happen is if ODLH losses to Pacquiao in December, he will be asking for a re-match. Oscar is just too proud to end his career on a negative note.

That then even makes it worse for Marquez.

And we all know how much cash that fight will generate. It may even over-shadow what the experts indicate the December 6th De la Hoya-Pacquiao fight will generate.

It that happens, Pacquiao?s last fight will then be with Hatton.

Marquez will be left out in the cold in spite of his brilliant win over Casamayor and a raise in his stock.

Too bad, but Marquez is simply too little, to late.
