LETTER TO THE EDITOR: FULFILLING A DESTINY- A REBUTTAL PhilBoxing.com Thu, 11 Sep 2008 From: Azzteka1, Latino Boxing Fan As a die hard fan i take pleasure in reading a nice "patriotic" article by Dan Neri Lim, the mayor of Tagbilaran. Bohol in the Philippines. truly, it is the embodiment of what Filipinos think of Pacquiao and how they adore him. Nothing wrong with that for Pacquiao, from what we heard, has done more for the "dreams" of Filipinos than what apparently all Filipino political leaders have done collectively. To make the country literally "stand still when he fights" is something we all should marvel about! However, I beg to disagree on his prediction of the end result of the De la Hoya-Pacquiao fight December 6, 2008. Lim ended his article with a "Merry Christmas". It will of course be a Merry Christmas not for the Pacquiao supporters but to all the Latinos and Latino-Americans who over the years have supported De la Hoya. I say this because I know in our hearts Pacquiao has no prayer. He is going to lose to De la Hoya, plain and simple. As we say in Mexico, "No es ningun rompe cabeza", a "no brainer". Pacquiao could be considered as the stuff miracles are made of. Agreed! Particularly that he rose from rags to riches. But the only miracle happening in December is all the money he will rake in as a result of the fight. And, that goes too for the many that pushed him to fight De la Hoya not because they would like to see him win, not because of the "glory for the Philippines", but because of the money they themselves will make at the expense of a possible injury to Pacquiao. Did it ever occur to Pacquiao supporters that none of these so called "Pacquiao people" ever mentioned that they are truly concerned about Manny's well being health-wise? All they said was it will be a good fight and Pacquiao is fully capable of beating De la Hoya. some say, he may even knock him out. Not one ever expressed concerned for the devastating power of De la Hoya that could hurt Pacquiao permanently. No one ever that he could end up like his trainer, Freddie Roach who suffers the debilitating effects of too many punches to the head. Yes, Pacquiao has the heart of a lion. But pure heart will not prevail over a sly power puncher that is de la Hoya. Particularly when things get "personal". Remember Fernando Vargas? I for one really wish Pacquiao will "stand toe to toe" with our Golden Boy. Then we will really see if he is as tough as Filipinos believe he is. He barely survived Juan Manuel Marquez who is not as heavy a puncher like De la Hoya. How much more against De la Hoya who is a natural 150 pounder and has fought as high as 160 pounds? And, even at age 35 can move faster than David Diaz. Even the faith of the Filipino people will not carry Pacquiao to victory this time around. Pacquiao has bitten more than he can chew, and he needs to spit it out. For him to even have a slight chance of beating the Golden Boy, he must be a "conejo", a rabbit like Mayweather Jr. Punch once and run around. There is no way he can knock out the Golden Boy. But as Lim mentioned, "he has a heart of a lion". In addition, I once read that Pacquiao exhibits that supposedly "Filipino warrior mentality" so he will not run like the Pretty Boy did. Sadly, it is that heart and that mentality that will finally put an end to his ambitions inside the ring. But the only good thing about that is it will also put an end to the rapacious appetite of those people around him that want him to continue fighting so they too will rake in the dollars, Pacquiao's health not with standing. We hope and pray that at the end , Pacquiao will still have his senses intact and enjoy the money he earned. Feliz Navidad! |
