DELGADO, SONSONA WIN IN GAPAN

PhilBoxing.com

Gapan, Nueva Ecija -- Reigning ABCO super-bantamweight champion Ariel Delgado and former RP super-flyweight champion Eden Sonsona impressively won their respective bouts to cap last Sunday?s 76-round 11-bout card dubbed ?Riot in Nueva Ecija ? Ubusan ng Lakas? held at the Gapan Gym in Gapan City, Nueva Ecija. The event was presented by Elmer Anuran?s Saved by the Bell Promotions.

Fighting in the third match of the triple main event, the more aggressive Delgado scored a technical decision win over veteran Jaime Barcelona in their fight held at the 126-lb limit. The bigger Barcelona took the first round out-jabbing and out-hustling Delgado. However, the tides immediately turned in the second round when a big Delgado left cross stunned Barcelona and a subsequent barrage by the former with the same kind of shots sent Barcelona to the floor. From then on, it was all Delgado whose crosses were regularly landing on Barcelona?s weakly guarded chin. Barcelona was actually boxing well on several occasions but could not sustain the effort allowing Delgado to dictate the fight. A clash of heads in the 7th round opened a deep cut above the right eye of Barcelona prompting a stoppage of the fight upon the advise of the ring physician. The judges? scorecards showed Delgado comfortably ahead (69-63, 68-64, and 68-65, respectively).

In the second triple main event fight held at the 118-limit, Eden Sonsona defeated regular RP flyweight contender Louie Bantigue via a unanimous decision. Either the weight factor, his opponent?s southpaw stance or speed might have troubled Bantigue, his face being a regular recipient of hard Sonsona shots. The game Bantigue occasionally scored with crisp punches but could not match the busier Sonsona who constantly out-punched him by 2:1 ratio. In the end, the judges? scorecards showed a wide margin for Sonsona (98-91 for two judges and 98-92 for the third judge). The fight was more competitive and more entertaining as the scores would indicate, even though the scorecards accurately reflect the result of the bout.

Tiger City?s Roel Lagonero scored the most spectacular win of the evening when towards the end of the first round, his right uppercut landed squarely to the jaw of Ronel Ferreras dropping him straight to the canvas. Ferreras was able to beat the count but still wobbly, Referee Virgilio Garcia stopped the fight at 2:40 of the round. The bout which was scheduled for 8 rounds was held at the 105-lb limit.

For the results of the other bouts:

Daniel Ferreras scored two knockdowns in the 2nd round to defeat Jason Jeda via a TKO in 2:42 of the round in a fight held at the super-flyweight limit;

Richard Donaire figured in split draw with Ruther del Castillo in their 8-round fight held at the 110-lb limit;

Rene Bistudio inflicted the first loss of Jhuriel Ramonal defeating the latter via a UD (two judges scoring 57-56 with the third judge scoring 59-55);

In a rematch of their first bout last March which ended in a draw, Al Sabaupan defeated Alejandro Anas with a 3rd round TKO (1:50) in their super-featherweight fight;

Edison Berwela defeated Ronnie Pelonia via a UD (59-55, 58-56, 60-57) in their bantamweight fight;

Rodynie Rafol defeated Richard Layson via a UD (40-36 in all three judges? scorecards) in another bantamweight fight;

Young protege Lolito Sonsona, in his second professional bout, scored a knockdown in the third round en route to winning over Roel Inao via a UD (39-36 twice, and 40-36) in their minimum-weight fight; and

Jay John Dacayanan defeated Victor Sayno via a UD (40-36 in all three judges? scorecards) in another minimum-weight fight in the night?s opener.
