PACQUIAO NOMINATED TO THE 'TOP 49 MOST INFLUENTIAL MEN' By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Sat, 23 Aug 2008 Filipino boxing superstar and current pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao has been officially nominated to the 'Top 49 Most Influential Men' of 2008 organized by AskMen.com. The contest, now on its 3rd year and parades some of the world's most notable names like US Presidential candidate Barack Obama, Apple's Steve Jobs, actor-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger, musician Paul McCartney and athlete Kobe Bryant as this year's nominees, determines the winner by online voting through AskMen.com's website. Actor George Clooney took the top place of the inaugural contest while soccer phenom David Beckham won last year after more than a million votes were cast online. Pacquiao came into the US boxing scene in 2001 with a 6-round drubbing of the then IBF superbantam champ Lehlohonolo Ledwaba and left a trail of destruction against some of Mexico's finest fighters in the years ahead to catapult him into the top of the boxing world where his popularity now pushes him to become a crossover star in the US and elsewhere. Fellow boxing pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and UFC's Anderson Silva also made it to this year's nominees. A total of 121 nominees coming from the business sector, politics, music, cinema, sports, culture and design industry comprise this year's batch of contestants. According to AskMen.com's Johnny Testa in an e-mail to PhilBoxing.com, the purpose of the Top 49 is to determine which guys have had the biggest impact on the way other men dress, talk, buy, and think over the past 12 months. Anyone is free to vote and as often as they like. The final results are scheduled to be revealed on Tuesday October 21st.
