FLORIDA POOL OPEN DAY TWO: GORST FALLS TO ATENCIO AS CHUA, YAPP, AND DUONG CRUISE INTO LAST 64

Jesus Atencio.

World No.1 Fedor Gorst suffered a surprise setback on day two of the 2025 LiveSB.io Florida Open Pool Championship, falling to Jesus Atencio, while Johann Chua, Aloysius Yapp, and Duong Quoc Hoang all booked their places in the Last 64.

The 2025 LiveSB.io Florida Open Pool Championship — the latest Matchroom Major on the World Nineball Tour — takes place at last year’s sell-out Mosconi Cup venue, the stunning Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida, from 5–10 August.

Gorst dropped into the Losers’ Qualification bracket following a 9-7 defeat to a red-hot Jesus Atencio, who continues his impressive run after toppling five-time US Open champion Earl Strickland on day one.

Atencio said: “It’s an honour to play against the best player in the world. To win here, in front of my parents, my wife, and my daughter — it means everything to me. That’s why I played with heart. I’m just here to enjoy every moment.”

Singapore’s Aloysius Yapp was among the first to seal a spot in the Last 64, edging past American Brandon Shuff 9-7 in a tense affair.

“It feels good to be through. It wasn’t my best performance — I struggled in parts — but the most important thing is I stayed focused and found a way to win.”

Looking ahead to a potential second Matchroom Major title this season after winning the UK Open in May, Yapp added:

“To win another Major this year would be incredible. I’m not thinking too far ahead — it’s still early days — but I’ll take it one step at a time. You can never have too many Major titles.”

Hanoi Open champion Johann Chua also progressed, edging past Norway’s Emil Gangfløt in a dramatic hill-hill encounter to reach the single elimination stage.

“That was a tough one. Emil played great, but I stayed patient and focused. I’m proud to be in the Last 64 again, but I’m not here just to make up the numbers. I’m here to win — nothing less.”

Jayson Shaw kept his tournament hopes alive with a gritty 9-6 comeback win over Indonesia’s Edward Koyongian, moving one match away from qualification.

“It was a scrappy game at times. I missed a 9-ball early and Edward punished me, but I didn’t give up. I dug deep and got the job done. This match just shows how high the standard is across the Tour right now. Off the table there’s a lot on my plate, but I know what I’m capable of — I’ve got the game to win another Major.”

Vietnam’s Duong Quoc Hoang continued his strong form with a dominant 9-3 win over Patric Gonzales, joining Yapp and Chua in the Last 64.

“I’m proud to make it into the Last 64 here at the very first Florida Open. It’s always special to be part of something new for the sport. I’ll stay focused and give it everything in the next round.”
