Tiauson rules Bulan, Sorsogon Open Rapid chess tourney; pockets P10,000
By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Tue, 27 May 2025
Recarte Tiauson gave away a draw in his final assignment against co-leader Gerald Lumberio after 26 moves of the Torre Attack Opening but still won the ABCAI Open Chess Tournament held at Sabang Gymnasium, Bulan, Sorsogon, last Saturday, May 25, 2025.
Tiauson, a Technical Account Manager at Five9 Philippines under Director Christ Paul Roxas, finished with 6.5 points on account of six wins and one draw in seven outings to rule the 15-minutes-plus-3-seconds-increment rapid time control format and pocketed the P10,000 top prize.
“I am very happy with my victory because almost all of the top players in Bulan, Sorsogon, and nearby provinces joined the tournament," the 37-year-old resident of Barangay Mabca, Municipality of Sagnay, Camarines Sur, said in an interview on Tuesday.
"I would like to thank Sagnay, Camarines Sur Mayor John Vincent B. Fuentebella and Five9 Philippines Director Christ Paul Roxas for supporting my participation in the ABCAI Open Chess Tournament,” he added.
Tiauson is set to compete in the Asian Amateur Chess Championships to be held on August 1 to 9, 2025, in Hong Kong.
Although he failed to take away the title from Tiauson after losing in the tie-break points, Lumberio took home the solo second place and the P6,000 cash prize after finishing with 6.5 points.
Four players tied for third to sixth places—Jeffrey Vega, Joshua Karl Ricacho, Patrick Ismael Credo, and Michael Godala—after finishing with 6.0 points each. However, Vega’s higher tie-break points earned him the third place.
John Andre Ruiz and Marlon Lumberio finished the tournament with similar 5.5 points, while Coellier Graspela and Sohaile Amatonding Jr. completed the top 10 finishers after scoring a total of 5.0 points apiece in this chess fest organized by Bulan Chess Club. -Marlon Bernardino-
