HERGIE BACYADAN ALSO QUALIFIES FOR PARIS OLYMPICS
By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Mon, 03 Jun 2024

Hergie Bacyadan booked a ticket to the 2024 Olympics and became the fifth boxer to qualify for the Paris Summer Games as the Philippines will be sending its biggest boxing delegation to the Olympics in almost three decades.
Bacyadan pummeled Venezuela’s Maryelis Yriza in the women’s 75kg division quarterfinals in the second World Qualification Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, last Sunday.
She grabbed one of the four Olympic slots in her category as Bacyadan seized a dominating unanimous decision win by scores of 30-26, 30-26, 30-26, 29-27, 29-27. Bacyadan survived a closely fought opening round by winning in three of the five judges' scores. In the second round, she hit Yriza with a thundering right uppercut that forced the referee to count a standing eight.
Yriza was able to continue, but the Venezuelan was on the receiving end of Bacyadan's compelling punches and brisk uppercuts.
Bacyadan of Tanudan, Kalinga, was a world champion in the Vietnamese martial art vovinam. Bacyadan began her campaign with a unanimous decision win over Spain’s Dunia Martinez then squeaked past Hungary’s Veronika Nakota via tiebreak in the round of 16.
The Philippines had two Olympic qualifiers out of four boxers entered in Bangkok, as Carlo Paalam also joined the Olympics team by hurdling the men’s 57kg division.
Rogen Ladon and Criztian Pitt Laurente faltered in their opening bouts. Bacyadan and Paalam will join Eumir Marcial, Nesthy Petecio, and Aira Villegas to comprise the biggest boxing delegation since the Philippines also had five boxers in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
