Suarez Shares Ring With 2016 Olympic Champ By Teodoro Medina Reynoso PhilBoxing.com Mon, 15 Apr 2024 Saurez (L) and Conceição (R). Charly Suarez recently shared the ring with 2016 Rio Olympics lightweight gold medalist Robson Conceição of Brazil with both winning their respective bouts at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, USA. Suarez who fought and lost to the Conceição in 2015, shared a few common things with the Brazilian fighter. Both fought and beat Luis Coria by unanimous but close decision, Suarez recently and Conceição in 2020 on his way to challenging for the world title versus Oscar Valdez which he narrowly lost. Both fought current IBF super featherweight titlist Joe Cordina with Robson winning twice. Charly lost by split decision to Cordina in the quarterfinals of the Rio Games. A third meeting between Robson and Cordina did not happen because Cordina lost his next match and was eliminated. Robson turned pro earlier than Charly and has had three world title cracks, losing to Oscar Valdez and Shakur Stevenson and being held to draw by Emmanuel Navarette. The Brazilian won his recent fight by 7th round TKO over previously once beaten Mexican Jose Ivan Guardado Ortiz which he hopes will lead to another title crack. Suarez, unbeaten at then 16-0, was supposedly slated to fight Henry Lebron in a world title eliminator but the also undefeated Puerto Rican cancelled and was substituted by Coria who proved to be a worthy replacement losing by at most two points on the judges scorecards. Charly hopes the win, his second straight in the US, will likewise set him up to fight the winner of the Joe Cordina vs Anthony Cacace IBF-IBO unification bout to be held in Saudi Arabia next month.
