New chess prince OJ Cantela eyes Balinas title PhilBoxing.com Fri, 15 Dec 2023 MANILA---FROM emerging as the country’s chess prince, Oscar Joseph "OJ" Cantela has turned his attention to achieving another feat — becoming a Balinas chess champion. “It would also be on my bucket list. Winning the 2024 GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Open Rapid Youth Chess Tournament on January 13," said Cantela after he gained 100 Elo rating points during the Open 16-under division of the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship held at the Pala Dean Martin Centro Congressi in Montesilvano, Italy last November 12 to 24, 2023. His first European international chess tournament was made possible with the support of sportsman Chavit Singson. Last August 27, the Barangay San Juan Uno, City of General Trias top player, bagged the gold medal in the Open 16-under division in the 12th Dato' Tan Chin Nam Foundation Open Rapid Age-Group Chess Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 15-year-old Cantela, a grade 11 student of Far Eastern University Diliman, also claimed the board 1 silver medal in the SMS Deen Merdeka Open Rapid Team Chess Championship 2023 held on August 25-26 also in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Cantela, a member of the multi-titled Far Eastern University chess team coached by Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales lead the long list of top Pinoy young woodpusher participants when the 2024 GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Open Rapid Youth Chess Tournament gets underway on January 13, 2024 at the Robinsons Galleria in Ortigas, Quezon City. The Balinas family offers a total pot prize of P25,000 in the 1 day tournament, open to all chess players ages 18 year old and below. Cantela is also set to play in the Coach NM Gerald Ferriol Open Rapid Youth Chess Tournament dubbed as GMG Open Rapid Youth Chess Tournament in February 2024 at the same venue. As of now, Cantela is preparing for the 2023 Batang Pinoy and Philippine National Games are set to kick off on Sunday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
