Quizon fails to gain 3rd GM norm

PhilBoxing.com

Standings after round 7:
5.0 points---GM Susan Megaranto (Indonesia)
4.0 points---GM Tuan Minh Tran (Vietnam), IM Paulo Bersamina (Philippines), GM John Paul Gomez (Philippines), IM Michael Concio Jr. (Philippines)
3.5 points---IM Daniel Quizon (Philippines), IM Joel Banawa (USA), IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia (Philippines)
2.5 points---GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. (Philippines)
1.0 points---WIM Miaoyi Lu (China)

MARIKINA CITY---THE elusive GM norm continued to slip past Filipino International Master Daniel Quizon.

His loss to compatriot Grandmaster John Paul Gomez in Round 7 (Thursday night) was all it took to break Quizon’s momentum and dash all hopes to nail his third and final GM norm in this week-long FIDE Standard tournament, jointly organized by International Master Roderick Nava and National Master David Almirol of Kamatyas Chess Club under the auspices of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

The 19-year-old freshman student at Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Dasmariñas taking up Bachelor of Science in Information Systems (BSIS) was to face countryman International Master Paulo Bersamina in Friday's eight round in the 11th edition of Kamatyas Invitational GM Tournament 2023 at the Grandmaster Eugene Torre Museum of Pan de Amerikana in Concepcion Dos, Marikina City.
The Dasmariñas City, Cavite-based Quizon is aiming a better finish in this 10 player field, single round robin tournament after losing his GM title bid in the seventh round.

"Hope maging maganda ang resulta ng laro ko sa last 2 rounds,' said Quizon, whose local and international chess campaign is backed up by Dasmariñas City, Cavite Mayor Jenny Barzaga, Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. and National Coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas.

With two rounds to go, Grandmaster Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia still on top with 5.0 points, full point ahead against Grandmaster Tuan Minh Tran of Vietnam, Bersamina, Gomez and International Master Michael Concio Jr. of the Philippines who totes 4.0 points each.

Quizon, International Master Joel Banawa of the United States and International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia of the Philippines were tied at 6th to 8th places with 3.5 points apiece.

Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. of the Philippines and Woman International Master Miaoyi Lu of China are in 9th to 10th placers with 2.0 points and 1.0 point, respectively.

Quizon had earned his first GM norm when he finished champion in the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championship in South Korea that also gave him an outright IM title in 2018.

He obtained his second GM norm during the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championship 2023 held at the Sabah Oriental Hotel in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia last Friday.

A player needs to complete the required three norms and reach at least 2500 Elo rating once.

For a number of years, the country has been longing, thirsting, and wanting for another GM to come.

Since Asia's First GM Eugene Torre achieved the GM feat in 1974, followed by the late Rosendo Balinas Jr. in 1976, the much younger Rogelio Antonio Jr. did his share in 1990.

Then a huge of next generation Filipino GMs came, starting in Year 2000 with the likes of Buenaventura Villamayor, Nelson Mariano II (2004), Mark Paragua (2005), Darwin Laylo (2007), Wesley So (2007), Jayson Gonzales (2008), John Paul Gomez (2008), Joseph Sanchez (2009), Rogelio Barcenilla (2009), Roland Salvador (2010), Julio Catalino Sadorra (2011), Oliver Barbosa (2011), Richard Bitoon (2011), and Enrico Sevillano (2012).-Marlon Bernardino-
