PhilBoxing.com Sun, 12 Nov 2023
In a riveting showdown at St Kilda Stadium in Melbourne, Australia, Cebu native Jhon Cortejos engaged in a closely contested battle, ultimately succumbing to a unanimous decision loss against Thailand's Thanawut Phetkum this Saturday night.
The pugilistic clash showcased the prowess and unwavering determination of both fighters, as they exhibited impressive skills in pursuit of victory. Australia-based Filipino boxer Jhon Cortejos, boasting a record of 4 wins and 2 losses, displayed remarkable spirit and resilience throughout the six-round bout.
Cortejos, hailing from Sale, Victoria, fought with commendable heart, giving his all in the ring. However, the crafty Thanawut Phetkum, with a record of 5 wins and 2 losses, proved to be a formidable adversary. Phetkum strategically alternated between orthodox and southpaw stances, disrupting the rhythm and style of Cortejos, leaving the Australian-based Filipino boxer grappling to find his footing.
"Jhon Cortejos, now residing in Sale, Victoria—it's always a pleasure to have him on the fight card, and he'll undoubtedly be making a return soon. He's in the process of improvement," remarked Australian Hall of Fame Promoter Peter Maniatis.
The seasoned promoter acknowledged that the night served as a valuable learning experience for Cortejos. Maniatis commended Phetkum for his slick and strategic approach, highlighting the effectiveness of his stance-switching tactics in unsettling Cortejos.
"Cortejos is undeniably a strong and promising boxer, but he's in the early stages of his career. He needs more experience, and tonight was part of that learning curve. He'll have another opportunity to further enhance his boxing career and skills," assured Peter Maniatis, expressing confidence in Cortejos' potential for growth and future success in the ring.
