Joel Delfin shines in AQ Prime Chess PhilBoxing.com Mon, 06 Nov 2023 Final Standings: 7.5 points---IM Paulo Bersamina 7.0 points---Sherwin Tiu, AGM Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo, IM Rolando Nolte 6.5 points---IM Daniel Quizon, Joel Delfin 6.0 points---FM Mark Jay Bacojo, FM Noel Dela Cruz, NM Ivan Travis Cu MANILA---Joel "BNM" Delfin, a chess genius from Pasig City, landed sixth place in the tough 3rd AQ Prime Fide Standard Chess Open being held at the 2nd Floor Exhibit Area near the Medical Depot of Ayala Malls, Manila Bay, Diosdado Macapagal corner Aseana Avenue, Parañaque City on Sunday. Fondly called BNM (Blitz National Master) in the chess world because of his speed in shorter time controls and time pressure, he gained 58 elo rating points. Delfin finished sixth among the 56 competitors consisting of some of the top chess players in the country. The blitz king chess wizard won P10,000 cash as prizes courtesy of AQ Prime Entertainment CEO Atty. Aldwin Alegre for his feat. He scored victories over Arwin Chris Hernandez in the first round, IM Barlo Nadera in the second round, Johnson Mancenido in the fifth round, Al Michael Arasin in the eight round and Rommel Lucion in the ninth and final round. He split the points with WIM Marie Antoinette San Diego in the sixth round and Alfredo Balquin Jr. in the seventh round. He lost to IM Ronald Bancod in the fourth round. "I'm happy with my performance," said Delfin, part of the coaching staff of PCAP's Cavite Spartans. IM Paulo Bersamina ruled the FIDE Open Standard event. Bersamina took home P50,000 and trophy; followed by Sherwin Tiu with P30,000 cash prize and medal. AGM Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo settled for third worth P20,000 and medal while IM Rolando Nolte earned P15,000 and IM Daniel Quizon got P12,000 making it for the top five finishers.-Marlon Bernardino- |
