JOHNNY FISHER NAMED BEST YOUNG BOXER OF THE YEAR BY BOXING WRITERS' CLUB PhilBoxing.com Sat, 23 Sep 2023 Romford Heavyweight star claimed Southern Area Title last time out Romford Heavyweight sensation Johnny Fisher has been named the 2023 Best Young Boxer of the Year by the prestigious Boxing Writers’ Club. The fast-rising star beat a talented shortlist of young British fighters, and joins a roll of honour stretching back to the first winner, Randolph Turpin, in 1951, which includes no fewer than 27 young boxers who went on to win World Titles. This illustrious roll call of talent includes the likes of Terry Downes, Howard Winstone, Ken Buchanan, John H Stracey, John Conteh, Barry McGuigan, Frank Bruno, Nigel Benn, Joe Calzaghe, Amir Khan and Kell Brook. Big punching Fisher, 24, is quickly establishing himself as one of the best young talents coming through the domestic scene with an explosive unbeaten record of 10 fights and nine knockouts since making his professional debut against Matt Gordan back in February 2021. 'The Romford Bull' claimed his first professional belt last time out on the Anthony Joshua vs. Robert Helenius card at The O2 in London, taking out Harry Armstrong in seven rounds to win the vacant Southern Area Heavyweight Title. "It is an absolute honour to receive the award of Best Young Boxer of the Year by the Boxing Writers’ Club," said Fisher. "I think of the names that have come before me and it's unbelievable; Frank Bruno being one of them that springs to mind immediately. "To be among the names like Nigel Benn, Amir Khan, Frank Bruno and Barry McGuigan is just feels surreal and it's an honour to be in the company of those sort of names. To be amongst those names is a privilege and I'll remember this day for the rest of my life. I really appreciate it. "I'm excited for the future; I know I've got a long long way to go but we've shown in a short amount of time what we're capable of. The support that I have is immense, and I'm getting better all the time. I know I can get even better and I'm excited to show everyone." “I’m thrilled that Johnny has been awarded the Boxing Writers’ Young Boxer of the Year of the award and he deserves it for all the hard work he has put in over the past twelve months,"said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. "It has been a hell of a journey since Johnny turned over back in 2021 behind closed doors and things are only just getting started after he picked up his first title last month. "He has a great team behind him in trainer Mark Tibbs, who continues to do a brilliant job, and S-JAM Boxing, not forgetting his devoted mum and dad. It won't be long before Johnny starts headlining shows and filling arenas himself - he is one of the most popular young fighters in British boxing." Trainer Mark Tibbs added: "This is absolutely fantastic for Johnny and I’m over the moon for him. This is the beginning of big things to come for Johnny because I know his heart and work ethic is second to none." Fisher will be presented with his award at the 70th Anniversary Dinner, to be held at The Savoy in London on Monday October 9. |
