General Trias City, Cavite---International Master Angelo Abundo Young ruled the Road to Mastery FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament held on July 22 and 23 at the General Trias, Cavite Manpower Building Pasong Tamo Kayawan 2, South Square Village here.

Young collected a total of 4.5 points on account of four wins, one draw and one loss in six outings to secure the title in the 2-day National Chess Federation of the Philippines sanctioned tournament.

National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr., National Master Robert Suelo Jr., International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad and Fide Master Carlos Edgardo Garma also scored the same output but had to settle for the second, third, fourth and fifth places, in order, as Young had the superior tie-break score.

"I expect the game to be tough and so close," said Young, Head Coach of Emilio Aguinaldo College Chess Team under the guidance of EAC Vice President for Administration Dr. Lorenzo C. Lorenzo.

“I’m glad to survive the pressure. At that time, I just told myself to focus and play my normal game," added Young, an 8-time Illinois, USA chess champion.

After an opening round sorry loss to female player Maryss Annxeniel Caldoza, Young bounced back by beating John Martin Firmalino, Stephen Von Estavillo, Jireh Dan Jaimie Cutiyog, Nathan Jon Anarna and halved the point with Garma to enroute the coveted title.

Tournament director was AFM Ederwin Estavillo and supervised by National Arbiters Mark Anthony Dulatre and Israel Landicho of the Philippine Arbiters Chess Confederation (PACC).

Young is fresh from winning the blitz event of Canon Carlsen Kasparov FIDE Blitz Open Chess Tournament last June 11 was held at the Robinsons Place, General Trias City, Cavite.

Young gained prominence by winning the Philippine Junior Chess Championship in the late 1980's.

Young will embark on a series of international competitions, starting with the 18th IGB Malaysian Chess Festival 2023 scheduled from August 25 to September 3 in Cititel Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Young is also set to compete in FIDE World Senior Championships 2023 in Terrasini, Italy, from October 24 to November 6, and the Penang Open this December 18-24 in Penang, Malaysia.

During the 2019 World Senior Chess Championships (in the +50 division) in Bucharest, Romania, Young, seeded 31st among 138 participants, ended up tied for fifth place alongside 12 others with 7.5 points apiece but wound up eighth overall after the tiebreaks were applied in the tournament topped by Ukrainian GM Vadim Shishkin.

The tournament will feature top-rated players from all over the world as from Russia, America, Europe, China, Vietnam, and the Middle East players.

Before the series of international competitions, Young is set to compete in the 46th Birthday Celebration of NM Bernardino on August 5 at the 2nd floor Open Kitchen Foodhall, Rockwell Business Center, Sheridan Street, Mandaluyong City.-Marlon Bernardino-
