Bemedalled Batang Pinoy woodpusher harvests 5 gold medals, 1 silver; sets sights on int’l competitions

MANILA---Mar Aviel Carredo of Quezon City won 5 golds and 1 silver medal to emerge the most bemedalled athlete in the chess competition at the conclusion of Philippine Sports Commission-Batang Pinoy National Championships last Wednesday, December 21, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

The 11-year-old Bagong Silangan Elementary School sixth-grader swept the 11 Under Male Batang Pinoy Rapid individual category en route the gold medal.

Carredo scored victories over Zyrus Wayne Manalang of Candon City in the first round, Jasper Nash Jayme of Misamis, Oriental in the second round, Justin Jed P. Ortillo of Laguna in the third round, Luiyen R. Wuo of Pangasinan in the fourth round and Aaron V. Aton of Davao City in the fifth and final round.

“I'm very happy with this victory, winning 5 golds and 1 silver,” said the amiable Carredo.

"It's my dream to eventually compete for our country in bigger competitions like the ASEAN and Asian/Eastern Age Group, World Youth and World Junior chess championships," added Carredo, who thank to his grandfather Avelino "Eli" Labian Carredo for his undying support to his chess career as well to Mayor Joy Belmonte, Vice Mayor Gian Sotto, Coun. Rannie Ludovica and Barangay Chairman Willy Cara.

Philippine Sports Commission commissioner and Bowling icon Olivia "Bong" Coo had something to say to the most bemedalled athlete Carredo.

"Congratulations Mar Aviel Carredo of Quezon City for winning 5 golds and 1 silver sa Batang Pinoy. Hanga ako sa sipag at galing mo! Hopefully masama ka na sa 2023 National Team Pool. Maligayang Pasko!!," said Coo, who is also the first Filipino athlete to make it to the Guinness Book of World Records twice.

The dynamic duo of Carredo and Allan Rafael Dolfo settled for second in the 11 Under Male Batang Pinoy Rapid team category to go home with the silver medal.

Actually, the tandem of Aton and Lance Andrei L. Lao of Davao City took the gold while the pair of Ran Zeth Marco Magallanes and Dwayne Alekhine Sapuan of Dipolog City won the bronze.
The triumvirate, Davao City, Quezon City and Dipolog City team tallied similar 7.5 points each, but the former (Davao City) took first after the tie break points was applied.

Carredo also won the gold in the Standard Individual category, Standard Team category, Blitz Individual category and Blitz Team category.

Thus, Carredo broke five gold records of Sumer Justine F. Oncita of Pasig City in the 13 Under Male category.

The 12-year-old Oncita, a grade 6 pupil of Manggahan Elementary School won the gold in the Standard Individual category, Standard Team category, Blitz Individual category, Blitz Team category and Rapid Team category.-Marlon Bernardino-
