'EDWIN VALERO' OF NEGROS DEBUTS SATURDAY

PhilBoxing.com

CEBU CITY -- With an undefeated amateur record of 23 wins, all wins coming by way of knockout all in the first round except one, a boxer from Amlan, Negros Oriental who has been called as the 'Edwin Valero of Amlan' because of the similarity on how he disposed his opponents with the WBA super featherweight champion from Venezuela, debuts as a pro on Saturday at the Cebu Coliseum in the undercard of 'Back on Track' boxing event headlined by Rodel Mayol and Bert Batawang.

His name is Cham Sedillo, a 21-year-old sugarcane plantation worker whose extra-curricular activity is to sneak into amateur boxing fights around the province of Negros and knocking out his opponents in the first round along the way. His only opponent who had gone more than a round with him was a former amateur gold medalist from Zamboanga City whom he stopped in the second round.

His desire to become a professional boxer has been granted when his employer, Nestor Tan, who is now acting as his manager, asked PhilBoxing.com scribe Salven Lagumbay for help. Sedillo is now training alongside world champion Florante Condes at the famed ALA Gym of Cebu.

"I know I have the power but I want to learn the finer points of boxing," Sedillo said when interviewed after this afternoon's presscon and who admitted he was elated to have finally doing the punch mitt routine for the first time in his boxing career when he came to Cebu this week.

"Parang si Condes din ang lakas (His power is like condes)," commented trainer Danny Bactol, who is now handling Sedillo and who is also currently preparing Condes for Condes' title defense against Rayito Garcia on June 14 in Mexico.

The 5-feet-4 Sedillo will fight as a featherweight (126 lbs) in his pro debut against Rosendo Navares of Ozamis City who is in his second professional fight. Sedillo's handlers said they are eyeing Sedillo to scale down to the superfly or bantamweight level as his natural fighting weight.

Editor's Note: Sedillo's first name is correctly spelled as 'Cham' not 'Chum' as previously reported.
