MASAM SPORTS 42: MANNY PACQUIAO IS RATED NO. 9 AMONG TOP 100 BOXERS OF ALL TIME BY THE RING

PhilBoxing.com

Senator Manny Pacquiao is considered by several boxing experts and mediamen as one of the greatest boxers of all time, having won 14 world titles in unprecedented eight weight divisions which include three Ring titles.

Nine of his world championship belts were from the "Big Four" sanctioning bodies, the WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO, three were from The Ring and two were minor world title belts.

Pacquiao held world titles at WBC flyweight, IBF super bantamweight, WBC super featherweight, WBC lightweight, WBO welterweight (three times), WBA (Super) welterweight, WBC light middleweight, IBO light welterweight, and WBA (Regular) welterweight.

He was also The Ring featherweight, super featherweight and light welterweight champion.

Pacquiao is ranked ninth place in The Ring’s top 100 boxers of all time and is The Ring’s highest-ranked southpaw.

Manny Pacquiao won 14 titles against the following boxer opponents:

WBC flyweight - Thailand's Chatchai Sasakul, 8th round KO

IBF super bantamweight - South Africa's Lehlohonolo Ledwaba, 6th round TKO

The Ring featherweight - Mexico's Marco Antonio Barrera, 11th round TKO

WBC super featherweight and The Ring Super featherweight - Mexico's Juan Manuel Márquez, split decision

WBC lightweight - United States' David Díaz, 9th round TKO

The Ring and IBO light welterweight - United Kingdom's Ricky Hatton, 2nd round KO

WBO welterweight - Puerto Rico's Miguel Ángel Cotto, 12th round TKO

WBC light middleweight - Mexico's Antonio Margarito, unanimous decision

WBO welterweight - United States' Timothy Bradley, unanimous decision

WBO welterweight - United States' Jessie Vargas, unanimous decision

WBA (Regular) welterweight - Argentina's Lucas Matthysse, 7th round TKO

WBA (Super) welterweight - United States' Keith Thurman, split decision

He lost his in his farewell fight to Cuba's Yordenis Ugas for the WBA (Super) welterweight title on August 21, 2021.

After that he announced his retirement in September 2021 to run for the Philippine presidency.

Pacquiao entered The Ring top 10s in four different decades from the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and the 2020s with wins over reigning champions or opponents who were ranked in the top two positions in every weight class he fought from flyweight to welterweight.

Pacquiao barged into the rankings by winning his first major world title at age 19 with a knockout of Sasakul. The unknown Pacquiao then had his second title shot against Ledwaba at junior featherweight, and since that upset victory, the Filipino is no longer unknown in world boxing scene.

With Ring titles at featherweight, junior lightweight and junior welterweight, Pacquiao also achieved No. 1-contender rankings at junior featherweight and welterweight. He became No. 1 ranked boxer at flyweight division during that time when The Ring did not recognize its own champions.

Pacquiao lost to Floyd Mayweather in the richest fight in the history of boxing. He defeated Tim Bradley in two fights of their trilogy. He fought nine fights against the deadly trio of Mexicans Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez, where Pacquiao scored an impressive 6-2-1 record.

He recovered from a savage knockout loss to Marquez to chalk up eight more wins over opponents who belong to the top ten contenders before losing his last bout to Ugas.

Pacquiao also acquired lineal titles in the flyweight, featherweight, super featherweight, light welterweight, and welterweight divisions.

His other titles include OPBF flyweight champion, WBC International super bantamweight champion, WBC International super featherweight champion, and WBO International welterweight champion (twice).

3. Muhammad Ali
4. Tony Canzoneri
5. Emile Griffith
6. Floyd Mayweather
7. Willie Pep
